Trine (by Frozenbyte) is a newly released platform game that has risen to the top sellers chart on Steam a single day after launch. Platformers aren’t exactly the most abundant genre (on PC) anymore, but this sidescrolling indie-game with luscious 3D graphics looks set to change that, with some unique twists to add to the genre.

In this game you take control of three characters (the knight, wizard and thief) and will have to fight monsters; jump, climb and swing across the varied decors; and solve some intricate puzzles. This is all supported with sweet physics tricks and a cast of three very unique characters with utterly differing abilities. And a multiplayer co-op mode, which allows all three characters to be played at once.

The knight can defend himself with a shield, bash through obstacles and kill undead like none other. But the thief can use her bow to attack from a distance, and shoot a rope towards higher ledges in order to swing to otherwise unreachable places. And the wizard can summon crates and planks or move objects, which are mostly useful for solving puzzles and supporting the acrobatic thief, but can also be used to defeat foes thanks the excellent implementation of physics.

There’s a lot more to say about this game, which I’ll cover tomorrow with some in-depth impressions after a few more proper play sessions. For now you can gaze upon a variety of screenshots demonstrating the visual splendor of this title.
