Mass Effect is a game that I blasted through in advance of its sequel and quite enjoyed in spite of its failing subquests and so-so combat system.
But there was one thing that irked me during this playthrough and that was the level of graphical detail. It just wasn’t up-to-par with any games of its time, so I set about looking for a solution. Other RPGs like Dragon Age, Oblivion and The Witcher have high resolution texture packs and the like to boost the in-game detail beyond it’s maximum, but it turns out there’s a much simpler method of improving Mass Effect’s visual splendor!
It turns out that BioWare forgot to add the maximum detail option in the in-game menu, which means that some clever tweaking of configuration files turns it into a much more appealing game. Higher resolution textures and higher detail on game objects can be called into play simply by changing a few values in a text file!
So here’s what you have to do to turn Mass Effect into a decent looking RPG:
- Go to your My Documents folder and from there navigate to the BioWare, Mass Effect and Config folders respectively.
- Copy the BioEngine.ini file and place it on your desktop for safekeeping, as a backup.
- Now open the BioEngine.ini file in the Config folder in a text editor like notepad.
- Scroll down to [SystemSettings] and change the value for DetailMode to 4.
- Scroll down to [TextureLODSettings] and double the maximum LOD values for each entry beneath it. Do not alter the minimum LOD values because that will crash your game.
- Optional: If you have a separate soundcard (or decent onboard card) installed then look for AudioDevice in the headers. Change the value for MaxChannels to 128. If you’re not sure which audio device you’re using, just change the values under each audiodevice header. At worst you’ll see a mild performance drop, but you’ll also notice a marked improvement in audio quality.
- Save the file, overwriting the original BioEngine.ini.
- Play Mass Effect with improved graphics and higher detail textures!
