With only a little over a week left until Splinter Cell: Conviction releases in Europe, Ubisoft has seen fit to unleash a Deluxe Edition across various digital download services. This deluxe edition includes five in-game bonuses at a slight premium (5 euro on the digital download services that list it thus far).
The bonus items included in this package are the MP-5 Submachine Gun, SC3000 Assault Rifle, SMG-2 Machine Pistols and Shadow Armor. It also comes with a special co-op (1-2 players) game mode called Infiltration, in which you’re tasked with clearing the map of all hostiles without being detected. GamersGate also lists the soundtrack as a bonus of the deluxe edition, but this is not mentioned on Direct2Drive and Steam, so it’s unclear whether this is a GamersGate deal or simply a deluxe edition feature.
As of right now, the GamersGate pre-order appears to be the least expensive option, whereas the Steam edition looks to offer the most value for your money. Steam adds a free copy of Splinter Cell to your account (or a friend’s account if you already own it on Steam) upon purchase of the Splinter Cell: Conviction Deluxe Edition.
It seems like a decent deal for Splinter Cell fans, but there is this little niggle of the UPlay DRM. As a Ubisoft game, Splinter Cell: Conviction will ship with the same restrictive DRM system that was featured in Assassin’s Creed 2 and Settlers 7. This means that you’ll need a constant internet connection, or the game will close. It also means that the Ubisoft servers need to be online and accessible for you to be able to play your game, which has proven the more immediate issue: Ubisoft’s servers have already seen several days worth of downtime since the release of Settlers 7, less than a month ago.
