An observant gamer can save a lot of money by frequently visiting digital download sites to check for new special offers. You can sometimes save as much as 80% on games with these deals, or even gain a free game for pre-ordering an upcoming title, which can quickly lead to a very healthy gaming collection at surprisingly little cost.

It’s a pain to constantly have to check all of these services for good deals however, so I’ll be doing that for you in this weekly feature! Short descriptions and recommendations are included per game. If the currency used on the site is not in euro (GamersGate) then I convert the pricing at the current exchange rate.

Just check GameDrone every week for a simple overview of all the special offers available on the wide variety of digital download services out there.

  • Booster Trooper – Save 10%8,09 EUR
A new sidescrolling multiplayer shooter with leaderboards and achievements.
  • Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare – Save 50% Weekend Deal – 12,49 EUR
You’ve probably heard about this game. It’s a popular first person shooter that has retained a big multiplayer community to this day. The gameplay is solid and moderately paced, but if you’re not interested in multiplayer shooters then you may as well ignore it. The singleplayer campaign is atrocious, with terrible storytelling, no memorable characters and horrible game mechanics like infinitely respawning enemies.
  • Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Stimulus Package – Save 10% Pre-order Deal – 13,49 EUR
An upcoming map pack for Modern Warfare 2. It contains five maps, two of which are remakes of Modern Warfare maps.
  • Dark Fall: Lost Souls – Save 10%25,19 EUR
A newly released horror adventure game.
  • Fluttabyes – Save 20% - 3,99 EUR
    A casual puzzle game.
  • Fortix – Save 25%3,59 EUR
    A casual indie strategy game.
  • Left 4 Dead 2 – Save 30% Weekend Deal – 20,09 EUR
A co-op zombie shooter that is utterly worth having, especially given the free ‘The Passing’ DLC that Valve released yesterday. This adds three new maps, two new weapons, one new uncommon zombie type, weekly new game modes and many other changes. Most interesting however, is the fact that you get to meet up with part of the old Left 4 Dead crew!
  • Left 4 Dead Bundle – Save 33% Weekend Deal – 33,49 EUR
The previous game bundled with the original Left 4 Dead at an excellent price point. Note that the original Left 4 Dead will also gain a new DLC pack in the coming weeks!
  • KrissX – Save 20%3,99 EUR
    A casual puzzle game.
  • Mole Control – Save 20%3,99 EUR
    A casual indie game.
  • Serious Sam HD: The Second Encounter – Save 10% Pre-Order Deal – 17,99 EUR
You also gain a special skin for multiplayer if you pre-order. And hey, it’s Serious Sam, so it’s going to be serious fun in co-op :)
  • Trine – Save 75%5,- EUR
A great indie platform game featuring singleplayer and local (same computer) co-op modes. Read my first impressions for an indication of what the game plays like and why you should get it. They’ve recently added a free new map in an update and it features 30 Steam achievements.
  • Wings of Prey – Save 25% Weekend Deal – 27,99 EUR
There’s a better deal for this arcade flight-sim on GamersGate.
  • Wings of Luftwaffe DLC – Save 20% Weekend Deal – 8,79 EUR
There’s a better deal for this Wings of Prey DLC pack on GamersGate.
  • World Basketball Manager 2010 - Save 10%8,09 EUR
Think low-budget Football Manager for Basketball.

Impulse

  • AI War/Zenith Remnant Pack – Save 50% Weekend Deal – 11,34 EUR
A 2D real-time 4X space strategy game that is relatively popular in the scene. It has deep strategic gameplay and allows for huge scale conflicts (with 30.000+ simultaneous ships in the galaxy) that should appeal to 4X gamers.
  • Armada 2526 – Save 50% Weekend Deal – 15,12 EUR
Another 4X space strategy game, but with a turn-based starmap and real-time battles. It’s a 3D game, so I presume it plays similar to the excellent Sword of the Stars (it even looks similar). It should be a good strategy game given the high user ratings it has received on Impulse.
  • Alganon – Save 50%14,61 EUR
A high quality fantasy-based MMORPG that clearly follows in World of WarCraft’s footsteps, but features no monthly fee.
  • King’s Bounty Gold Edition – Save 75% Weekend Deal – 14,99 EUR
Two of the best fantasy turn-based strategy games ever made. An excellent deal if you missed out on D2D’s ridiculous sale last week. Note that D2D is offering the same package for an identical price.
  • Paradox Strategy Pack – Save 50% Weekend Deal – 24,99 EUR
Contains four strategy games from Paradox. There’s a World War 2 game and 4X space strategy game, but there are better deals to be had this week in those genres.
  • Rise of Prussia – Save 30% Weekend Deal – 20,99 EUR
    A board-game inspired top-down turn-based strategy game.
  • Storm Over the Pacific – Save 10% Pre-order Deal – 39,59 EUR
There’s a better deal for this game on GamersGate.
  • THQ Ultimate Bundle – Save 66%104,19 EUR
An absolutely awesome deal if you don’t own any THQ games. Includes such excellent titles as the Red Faction series, Dawn of War 1 + expansion, Company of Heroes + expansions, Supreme Commander + expansions, Titan Quest + expansion and the original S.T.A.L.K.E.R.
  • Tikibar – Save 25%5,29 EUR
    A casual ‘time-management’ game.
  • World War 2: Time of Wrath – Save 50%13,49 EUR
    A World War 2 turn-based strategy game.

GamersGate (UK)

  • Amnesia: The Dark Descent – Save 20% Pre-order Deal – 11,82 EUR
An upcoming first person survival horror game.
  • Beat Hazard – Save 25%5,95 EUR
A music-driven arcade shooter in space. Similar in style to Geometry Wars, but enemy waves are based on your own MP3s.
  • Crusaders: Thy Kingdom Come – Save 50% Weekend Deal – 9,17 EUR
A large-scale real-time strategy game set in the Middle Ages.
  • Dawn of Discovery Gold Edition - Save 25% Weekend Deal – 43,11 EUR
Known as Anno 1404 in the rest of Europe, this Gold edition packs both the original RTS and it’s expansion pack Venice. Contains activation limit DRM, but otherwise is easily one of the best entries in the celebrated Anno series. It looks absolutely stunning, which combined with the solid city-building and strategic combat mechanics make for a great game. The included expansion pack also adds multiplayer functionality.
  • Disciples 2 Gold Edition – Save 50% Weekend Deal – 10,34 EUR
Disciples 2 and it’s two expansion packs for a very good price. These are older turn-based fantasy strategy games that have received top ratings across the board. Definitely worth it.
  • Hamlet – Save 10% Pre-order Deal – 8,24 EUR
    An upcoming adventure game.
  • Medieval 2: Total War Gold Edition – Save 50% Weekend Deal – 8,61 EUR
An older entry in the renown Total War franchise, featuring the Medieval era. Large-scale real-time strategy battles and turn-based campaign map gameplay bundled into one excellently crafted package. In other words: a ridiculously good deal. Note: if you don’t own any Total War games, then you may want to look into Direct2Drive’s Total War Collection deal instead.
  • Men of War Gold – Save 50% Weekend Deal – 16,11 EUR
There’s a much better deal for these World War 2 strategy games on Direct2Drive.
  • Mount & Blade Bundle – Save 40% Weekend Deal – 23,- EUR
Both Mount & Blade games for a very low price. Definitely worth it for these excellent open-world RPGs with full combat control.
  • Painkiller Universe – Save 40%10,34 EUR
A series of arcade shooters that never quite gained the popularity it deserved. Contains the excellent Painkiller, not-so excellent Battle out of Hell and terrible Overdose. Horrible storytelling in all of them, but great arcade singleplayer fun similar to Serious Sam (but a little darker). The fun multiplayer component is dead nowadays.
  • Storm Over the Pacific – Save 10% Pre-order Deal – 35,87 EUR
A World War II wargame featuring the pacific conflict.
  • The Whispered World – Save 10% Pre-order Deal – 20,47 EUR
An upcoming adventure game that looks promising.
  • Thief: The Dark Project & Thief: Deadly Shadows – Save 50% Weekend Deal – 10,89 EUR
The first and third game in the celebrated Thief franchise. This is a stealth action franchise that you could consider the (superior) predecessor to the Splinter Cell franchise. Definitely worth it, although you’ll have to pick up Thief II somewhere seperately.
  • Wings of Prey – Save 20% Weekend Deal – 27,60 EUR
A decent arcade flight simulator set in World War 2.
  • Wings of Luftwaffe – Save 20% Weekend Deal – 8,25 EUR
A DLC pack for Wings of Prey that adds 10 singleplayer missions, 2 aircraft and 40 aircraft skins.
  • Zombie Driver – Save 50% - 4,53 EUR
    A zombie-killing driving game.

Direct2Drive (EU)

  • Aaaaa! – Save 50%4,95 EUR
An indie-game that tasks you with base jumping through a floating city, doing all sorts of tricks and stunts to attain new highscores.
  • A Farewell To Dragons – Save 83% - 3,95 EUR
A fantasy action RPG based on the books of Russian fantasy authors Sergey Lukyanenko and Nikolay Perumov. The couple of critic reviews out there seem to indicate a poor Diablo clone.
  • Capitalism 2 – Save 50%8,95 EUR
    Become a rich CEO… yay?
  • East India Company – Save 83%4,95 EUR
A mediocre strategy game that attempts to emulate the Total War franchise, but never quite attains the same level of excellence.
  • Eufloria – Save 75%3,50 EUR
Best described as a curious mix between tower defense and planetary-invasion games like Galcon and Mayhem Intergalactic. This indie-game has a beautiful art style and unusual gameplay mechanics that make it a worthwhile purchase, especially at this price.
  • Fallen Earth – Save 63%16,95 EUR
An independently developed post-apocalyptic MMORPG. It offers uncommon freedom to players, with a player-driven economy similar to EVE Online’s, but is also a lot harsher and less quest driven than most MMOs.
  • Grand Theft Auto IV – Save 75%7,50 EUR
One of the best games in the series and one you should add to your collection if you haven’t already. Okay, the port job was handled poorly, with a fair few performance issues at higher detail levels, but even with low detail settings it still looks and plays significantly better than the console version.
  • Guild Wars Trilogy – Save 50%17,95 EUR
Deal of the Week! You get three out of four Guild Wars games for a ridiculously low price. Which is brilliant, because Guild Wars is gearing up towards a shitload of free content updates in the very near future and the community has started returning in droves! You’d only need to purchase the excellent Eye of the North expansion pack seperately.
  • Imperium Romanum Gold Edition – Save 75%4,95 EUR
A celebrated series of Roman Empire simulation games. This includes the first expansion pack, but not the DLC packs.
  • Infernal Uncensored – Save 80%9,95 EUR
    A mediocre action game.
  • King’s Bounty: Gold Edition – Save 67%14,95 EUR
Two of the best fantasy turn-based strategy games ever made. An excellent deal if you missed out on D2D’s even better sale last week. Note that Impulse has the exact same deal.
  • Medieval 2: Total War – Save 50%4,95 EUR
An older entry in the renown Total War franchise, featuring the Medieval era. Large-scale real-time strategy battles and turn-based campaign map gameplay bundled into one excellently crafted package. This Does not include the expansion pack Kingdoms, unlike the GamersGate and D2D Total War Collection deals!
  • Men of War – Save 83%1,95 EUR
A well-received World War 2 strategy game at a ridiculously low price.
  • Men of War: Red Tide – Save 80%3,95 EUR
The expansion pack to Men of War.
  • Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic – Save 50%4,95 EUR
Easily one of the best Star Wars games ever made, this BioWare RPG is an absolute must-have. The only downside of this deal is that it does not include the expansion pack, which is also not available on D2D. Neither is KotOR 2 for that matter.
  • Star Wars: The Force Unleashed: Ultimate Sith Edition – Save 50%14,95 EUR
A mediocre Star Wars action game that was poorly ported to the PC. Poor storytelling, mediocre gameplay, terrible controls and so-so graphics make for a very forgettable experience. Not worth it unless you’re a huge Star Wars fan, you’d do much better in picking up Knights of the Old Republic.
  • Supreme Commander Gold Edition – Save 75%4,95 EUR
Two of the best real-time strategy games for half the price of a movie ticket? Why are you still here? Go get it now!
  • The Path – Save 50%3,25 EUR
A very dark and unusual indie game featuring little red ridinghood. Definitely unsuitable for children!
  • Total War Collection – Save 50%32,50 EUR
Real-time strategy battles mix with turn-based campaign maps to form one of the most popular strategy franchises. This collection contains Rome Gold, Medieval 2 Gold and the more recent Empire: Total War. An excellent set for players who’ve yet to enjoy the Total War franchise.
  • Tropico 3 – Save 50%14,50 EUR
Become president of a tropical island and rule it as you please.
  • Tropico Reloaded – Save 50% - 7,50 EUR
A package that contains Tropico, it’s expansion pack and Tropico 2.

Get Games

  • Dawn of Magic Gold Edition – Save 25% Pre-order Deal - 26,24 EUR
A collection (DoM 1 & 2) of very poor hack & slash RPGs. The graphics are excellent by east European development standards, but the gameplay is absolutely terrible. The controls are especially cumbersome, even more-so than the critically annihilated Space Siege.
  • Space Rangers – Save 66%3,33 EUR
This is a difficult game to describe. It’s part RPG, part RTS, part Sim. You’re a space pilot and you can do whatever you want: trade, fight, follow the storyline, accept missions, become a pirate, etc. However it also features strategic ground battles and all sorts of quirky encounters. It’s a very unusual game in the way that the King’s Bounty games are over-the-top weird… and like those games, Space Rangers is one game you can’t afford to miss out on.
  • Space Rangers 2: Reboot – Save 66%6,66 EUR
If Space Rangers is a game that you can’t afford to miss, then not playing Space Rangers 2 is pure heresy. It improves upon the original in every regard.
  • XIII Century Gold EditionSave 50%12,49 EUR
A very well-received strategy game set in the 13th century. It features gameplay very similar to the Total War series, with large-scale real-time battles.

Good Old Games

  • Descent + Descent 2 – Save 30%3,15 EUR
Descent was among the very first 3D games ever created and features fun space-combat inside asteroid complexes. Both Descent and Descent 2 are genuine classics.
  • Descent 3 + Expansion – Save 30%3,15 EUR
Descent 3 plays much the same as its predecessors, but it looks a lot better. If you’re going to get a Descent game, then this one is the best.
  • Freespace + Expansion – Save 30% - 3,15 EUR
A space combat simulator of epic proportions. Not quite as good as it’s sequel, but definitely worth a go!
  • Freespace 2 - Save 30%3,15 EUR
You can’t honestly call yourself a gamer if you’ve never played Freespace 2. It’s the ultimate space combat simulator and has gained a large following during the last 11 years. And with the death of the space-sim genre, that following has taken to modding Freespace 2 rather than playing new games. So you can find hundreds of mods that improve the graphics, add entire new singleplayer campaigns and loads of other custom content. Prior to this week’s release of Outcast, Freespace 2 was undeniably the best game available on Good Old Games.
