In spite of its almost universally hated multiplayer mechanics, Modern Warfare 2 is still one of the most popular multiplayer PC shooters today. And Activision wouldn’t be Activision if it didn’t see fit to profit handily from this fact, by releasing paid DLC for their most recent multiplayer shooter. So they set Infinity Ward to work on a paid map pack, which was recently released for the Xbox 360 version.
In May, May 4th to be precise, this map pack will be released for the PC version. It contains two old Modern Warfare maps: crash, a war-torn urban environment; and Overgrown, a massive dry creek bed. It also features three new maps, namely Bailout, a multi-level apartment complex; Storm, an industrial park littered with heavy machinery; and Salvage, a snowy junkyard level.
That’s right, it’s a map pack consisting of a mere 5 maps and nothing else. Ridiculously, the price point for this flimsy DLC pack is set at 15,- euro, or 13,50 if you pre-order on Steam. No, I didn’t misplace the comma, that’s 15 euro – or 3 euro per map! This looks utterly ridiculous next to Valve’s recent free DLC pack for Left 4 Dead 2, The Passing, which contains three new maps, two new guns, one new zombie type, weekly new game modes and advances the story from where L4D2 left off!
The worst part however, is that Activision can actually pull this kind of crap. There is no map editor for Modern Warfare 2, nor dedicated servers, so modding is out. As a result, MW2 players have been starved for new content for months and most of them will be more than willing to shell out for a few new maps to play on. It will probably follow in World of Warcraft’s Celestial Steed’s footsteps, another overpriced DLC pack from Activision, which generated millions of dollars in mere hours.
