An observant gamer can save a lot of money by frequently visiting digital download sites to check for new special offers. You can sometimes save as much as 80% on games with these deals, or even gain a free game for pre-ordering an upcoming title, which can quickly lead to a very healthy gaming collection at surprisingly little cost.

It’s a pain to constantly have to check all of these services for good deals however, so I’ll be doing that for you in this weekly feature! Short descriptions and recommendations are included per game. If the currency used on the site is not in euro (GamersGate & Good Old Games) then I convert the pricing at the current exchange rate.

Just check GameDrone every week for a simple overview of all the special offers available on the wide variety of digital download services out there.

Deals of the Week

  • Portal on SteamFree until 24th of May!
Valve’s brilliant first person action/puzzle game in which you use a portal gun to fling yourself across levels and solve puzzles. Portal is also known for its atmospheric singleplayer campaign, which takes place in the Half Life setting. You assume the role of Chell, a young woman trapped in the Aperture Science Enrichment Center, who has to overcome a series of challenges posed to her by the native, cake-loving, artificial intelligence known as GLaDOS. It’s entirely free if you get it before the 24th of May – so get to it!

Steam

  • Flotilla – Save 10% Launch Deal – 8,09 EUR
There’s a much better deal for this indie space strategy game over on Impulse.
  • Iron Grip: Warlord – Save 20% Launch Deal – 5,59 EUR
A mixture of real-time strategy and first person shooter gameplay that has been overwhelmingly negatively received.
  • Quantz – Save 70% Launch Deal – 2,70 EUR
An action-puzzler with some very unorthodox puzzling gameplay.
  • RailWorks Glasgow Airport Rail Link Add-on – Save 23% Launch Deal - 22,99 EUR
Yet another DLC pack for this rail simulation game that adds the route from Glasgow Central to Paisly St. James.
  • Shattered Horizon – Save 25% Launch Deal – 14,99 EUR
The price for this multiplayer first person shooter in space has been reduced in celebration of the release of the free Firepower weapons pack. It features three gamemodes, eight weapons, eight maps and fast-paced yet semi-realistic shooting gameplay in space suits. See also my first impressions of the new weapons pack. Note that this deal will end very soon (likely today).
  • Torchlight – Save 50% Midweek Deal – 7,99 EUR
Singleplayer hack & slash RPG gameplay at its finest. It’s a Diablo clone, but a very good one and its certainly worth having at this price. Get it quick, because the deal will end very soon (likely today).

Impulse

  • Alganon – Save 50%14,61 EUR
A high quality fantasy-based MMORPG that clearly follows in World of WarCraft’s footsteps, but features no monthly fee.
  • Determinance – Save 40% Weekend Deal – 8,82 EUR
An independently developed multiplayer swordfighting game. They key features are flight and fully mouse-controlled swordfighting.
  • Fallen Earth – Save 25% Weekend Deal – 23,94 EUR
Make a life for yourself in a post-apocalyptic world along with thousands of other players. It includes the first 30 days and two exclusive items, but you’ll need to pay a monthly fee after that. I actually created my first character yesterday, so I hope to have some first impressions up soon-ish.
  • For the Glory – Save 60% Weekend Deal - 7,99 EUR
Turn-based world conquest from a top-down perspective spanning the 1400s to the 1800s. Includes over 10000 historical events, but I doubt it’ll be entirely accurate given how the player can influence events in these kinds of games. Nonetheless, Impulse users seem to appreciate it, with a 4-out-of-5 user rating.
  • Sherlock Holmes Sleuth Pack – Save 35% Weekend Deal – 38,99 EUR
A collection of Sherlock Holmes themed adventure games. Includes The Awakened, vs Jack the Ripper and Nemesis. Interestingly Nemesis is only available in this package, because the stand-alone version is region-locked to North America.
  • Sherlock Holmes Versus Arsene Lupin – Save 35% Weekend Deal – 12,99 EUR
Yet another Sherlock Holmes themed adventure game, but this one is not included in the Sleuth Pack.
  • Storm Over the Pacific – Save 10% Pre-order Deal – 39,59 EUR
There’s a better deal for this game on GamersGate.
  • THQ Ultimate Bundle – Save 66%104,19 EUR
An absolutely awesome deal if you don’t own any THQ games. Includes such excellent titles as the Red Faction series, Dawn of War 1 + expansion, Company of Heroes + expansions, Supreme Commander + expansions, Titan Quest + expansion and the original S.T.A.L.K.E.R.
  • World War 2: Time of Wrath – Save 50%13,49 EUR
    A World War 2 turn-based strategy game.

GamersGate (UK)

  • AI War/Zenith Remnant Pack – Save 50% Weekend Deal – 11,- EUR
A 2D real-time 4X space strategy game that is relatively popular in the scene. It has deep strategic gameplay and allows for huge scale conflicts (with 30.000+ simultaneous ships in the galaxy) that should appeal to 4X gamers.
  • Air Aces Pacific – Save 5% Pre-order Deal - 38,45 EUR
An upcoming arcade flight simulator set in the Pacific theatre of World War 2.
  • Alien Dominion: The Acronian Encounter – Save 20% Weekend Deal – 6,- EUR
A linear singleplayer 3D space shooter.
  • Alpha Protocol Pre-order – Save 29% Pre-order Deal – 28,75 EUR
An upcoming role-playing game from Obsidian Entertainment (Neverwinter Nights 2, Knights of the Old Republic 2). The player assumes the role of a spy in a modern-day setting.
  • Amnesia: The Dark Descent – Save 20% Pre-order Deal – 11,82 EUR
An upcoming first person survival horror game.
  • Armada 2526 – Save 50% Weekend Deal – 17,40 EUR
Another 4X space strategy game, but with a turn-based starmap and real-time battles. It’s a 3D game, so I presume it plays similar to the excellent Sword of the Stars (it even looks similar). It should be a good strategy game given the high user ratings it has received on Impulse.
  • Dark Horizon – Save 60% Weekend Deal – 4,17 EUR
Another linear singleplayer 3D space shooter.
  • Dark Matter – Save 50% Weekend Deal – 8,09 EUR
    An asteroids remake.
  • Elliptic Twist – Save 25%3,01 EUR
A new action shooter game, with gameplay somewhat similar to Geometry Wars, but with a little twist. Rather than flying around an arena, you are attached to the border of the arena.
  • Evochron Legends – Save 50% Weekend Deal – 13,07 EUR
A freeform space simulation game. Trade, explore, fight, pirate, etc in a vast universe.
  • Evochron Renegades – Save 50% Weekend Deal – 10,45 EUR
The prequel to Evochron Legends, with fewer features, environments and missions as well as a steeper learning curve.
  • Flock – Save 50% Weekend Deal - 5,81 EUR
Herd sheeps with your cute little UFO. An unusual and colorful puzzle game.
  • Flotilla - Save 50% Weekend Deal – 4,60 EUR
An indie-game featuring strategic space combat and exploration.
  • Galactic Assault: Prisoners of Power – Save 60% Weekend Deal – 3,70 EUR
A turn-based strategy game, which contrary to its name seems to consist entirely of ground battles.
  • Genesis Rising – Save 51% Weekend Deal – 2,27 EUR
A decent space-based real-time strategy game that focuses on small-scale fleet combat with biological space ships that can transform to adapt to changing battlefield conditions.
  • Gratuitous Space Battles Complete – Save 50% Weekend Deal – 15,03 EUR
Positech Games’ brilliant space strategy games that remove all battlefield control, but include much greater pre-battle ship and strategy design. A lot of fun to play, especially with the included Order, Swarm and Tribe expansion packs.
  • Hotel Collector’s Edition – Save 10% Pre-order Deal – 15,57 EUR
    An upcoming adventure game.
  • Light of Altair - Save 50% Weekend Deal – 7,51 EUR
A real-time space strategy game in which you build colonies from the ground up and defend them from attacks, while slowly expanding your influence. The colony building and ship design features, as well as the stylistic graphics, set it apart from its competition.
  • Lost Empire – Save 60% Weekend Deal – 4,18 EUR
Turn-based 4X space strategy with real-time battles, but not as good as Sword of the Stars or Armada 2526.
  • Lost Empire: Immortals – Save 60% Weekend Deal – 4,63 EUR
    See above.
  • Master of Orion 3 – Save 50% Weekend Deal – 10,42 EUR
The inferior sequel to the excellent Master of Orion 1 & 2 turn-based 4X space strategy games. It’s available for less over at Good Old Games, which also includes a lot of bonus content.
  • Space Empires 4 – Save 50% Weekend Deal – 5,18 EUR
An excellent turn-based 4X space strategy game.
  • Space Empires 5 – Save 50% Weekend Deal – 10,42 EUR
    Similar to Space Empires 4.
  • Space Rangers – Save 50% Weekend Deal - 4,65 EUR
This is a difficult game to describe. It’s part RPG, part RTS, part Sim. You’re a space pilot and you can do whatever you want: trade, fight, follow the storyline, accept missions, become a pirate, etc. However it also features strategic ground battles and all sorts of quirky encounters. It’s a very unusual game in the way that the King’s Bounty games are over-the-top weird… and like those games, Space Rangers is one game you can’t afford to miss out on.
  • Space War Commander – Save 50% Weekend Deal – 8,89 EUR
A 2D real-time strategy game in which you control the last remnants of the human fleet (think Battlestar Galactica).
  • SpaceForce Rogue Universe – Save 50% Weekend Deal – 5,18 EUR
The worst space-sim and one of the worst games that I’ve ever had the misfortune of playing. Terrible!
  • Star Fury – Save 50% Weekend Deal – 5,18 EUR
    A 3D space-sim.
  • Star Wolves – Save 50% Weekend Deal – 4,65 EUR
You control a mothership and a set of pilots in their own fighter craft through an extensive singleplayer campaign. The voice-acting is very sub-par and the graphics are merely decent, but the gameplay is very addictive and fun. The universe just sucks you in after a few hours of play.
  • Storm Over the Pacific – Save 10% Pre-order Deal – 35,87 EUR
A World War II wargame featuring the pacific conflict.
  • Supernova 2: Space War – Save 50% Weekend Deal – 8,67 EUR
    A 2D turn-based 4X space strategy game.
  • Sword of the Stars: Ultimate Collection – Save 50% Weekend Deal – 11,58 EUR
Turn-based empire management combines with a real-time 3D strategic battle system for some excellent 4X space strategy gameplay. One of the better 4X strategy games in recent years and quite possibly the easiest to get started with. Includes innovative features such as a random tech tree.
  • Tales of Monkey Island Complete Edition – Save 50% Weekend Deal – 12,77 EUR
The entire first season of Tales of Monkey Island from Telltale Games. A series of excellent pirate-themed comedy adventure games that any self-respecting adventure gamer should already own.
  • Tarr Chronicles – Save 60% Weekend Deal – 4,17 EUR
    A linear singleplayer space shooter.
  • The Tomorrow War – Save 50% Weekend Deal – 11,63 EUR
I’ve yet to review (or play) this space shooter, but check out my preview for some details.
  • UFO: Extraterrestrials – Save 60% Weekend Deal – 4,17 EUR
Take command over a group of special agents that are tasked with securing the planet against alien incursions.
  • X3: Terran Conflict – Save 25% Weekend Deal – 13,08 EUR
A recent space simulation game that offer a lot of depth. You really need to have a joystick to play it comfortably, but it’s oh-so worth it. The best space-sim in years, albeit a little underwhelming on the combat side of things (and overwhelming in every other way).

Direct2Drive (EU)

  • Borderlands - Save 40%29,95 EUR
Combine the random loot and leveling system of Diablo with the frantic action of co-op Serious Sam and you get the first person shooter that is Borderlands. A huge world, thousands of randomly assembled weapons and four great characters make for a lot of fun. It has a few console touches, such as a poorly developed multiplayer browser, but it’s worth it nonetheless. Interestingly this reduced price is the same as Steam’s default price for Borderlands, so get it on whichever of these platforms you prefer.
  • Dark Void w/ Prima Guide – Save 7%59,95 EUR
Jetpacking around an alternate universe with alien opponents seemed like fun, until Dark Void was released. It was ultimately a very disappointing game and I definitely wouldn’t recommend it at this price point.
  • Mount and Blade + Warband Bundle – Save 10%53,95 EUR
Two excellent medieval life simulators, with Warband adding in 32-player multiplayer combat. Still, you’ll be better served simply purchasing Warband stand-alone, because Mount and Blade doesn’t really feature anything that Warband doesn’t improve upon.
  • Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell Conviction w/ Prima Guide – Save 4%59,95 EUR
An interesting new spy game in the Splinter Cell series that feature terrible DRM and comes in at a ridiculous price point. Can you say overpriced? I can. If you want this game, then get it somewhere else, because mostly any other service offers the Deluxe Edition for less than this.
  • Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell Conviction Deluxe Edition w/ Prima Guide – Save 4%64,95 EUR
Again: overpriced, get it somewhere – anywhere – else if you think you can stand the DRM. Note that connection issues are more frequent with Conviction than previous Ubisoft games (Settlers 7, Assassin’s Creed 2) with this DRM.
  • Torchlight – Save 15%9,95 EUR
There’s a better deal for this excellent hack&slash game over at Steam.

Good Old Games

  • Aquanox – Save 40% Weekend Deal – 2,84 EUR
Aquanox can best be described as FreeSpace 2 underwater. In the 27th century humanity has moved underwater and you’re the leader of a mercenary company trying to earn a living. So you hire yourself out to the highest bidder and blow stuff up in your souped up submarine craft. Great straight-up action gameplay, albeit entirely linear and accompanied by poor voice acting.
  • Postal 2 Complete – Save 40% Weekend Deal – 4,72 EUR
Postal dude has a daily life much like anyone else: he has to get milk at the grocery store, cash in his paychecks and return library books. So in Postal 2 you get to participate in all of these awesome and engaging activities! The catch is that you’re let free in how you want to accomplish these objectives, so if you’re face with a lengthy queue at the register, then you simply strap a cat to your submachine gun and use this silenced weapon to tear through the queue. Guaranteed to shorten the waiting time!
  • Painkiller Black Edition – Save 40% Weekend Deal - 4,72 EUR
The best version of the infamous Painkiller franchise. It includes the original Painkiller game and the Battle out of Hell expansion pack, for some kick-ass run & gun singleplayer gameplay and awesome fast-paced multiplayer battles. It’s too bad that multiplayer is largely dead nowadays.
  • Redneck Rampage Collection – Save 40% Weekend Deal – 2,83 EUR
A couple of rednecks are all that stands in the way of a fullscale alien invasion. Think Duke Nukem 3D, but with rednecks. Includes all three Redneck Rampage games.
