An observant gamer can save a lot of money by frequently visiting digital download sites to check for new special offers. You can sometimes save as much as 80% on games with these deals, or even gain a free game for pre-ordering an upcoming title, which can quickly lead to a very healthy gaming collection at surprisingly little cost.
It’s a pain to constantly have to check all of these services for good deals however, so I’ll be doing that for you in this weekly feature! Short descriptions and recommendations are included per game. If the currency used on the site is not in euro (GamersGate and Good Old Games) then I convert the pricing at the current exchange rate.

A strategic take on the popular new DotA subgenre. The launch issues have been resolved and it’s just a very solid strategic hero-control game now, but unfortunately not quite as popular as its competition (Heroes of Newerth and League of Legends). - Eschalon Book II – Save 25% Launch Deal – 15,91 EUR
An enormous new indie RPG, with over 40 hours of gameplay. The graphics are a bit dated, but the gameplay and storytelling supposedly makes up for it. - For the Glory – Save 60% Weekend Deal - 7,99 EUR
Turn-based world conquest from a top-down perspective spanning the 1400s to the 1800s. Includes over 10000 historical events, but I doubt it’ll be entirely accurate given how the player can influence events in these kinds of games. Nonetheless, Impulse users seem to appreciate it, with a 4-out-of-5 user rating. - Sins of a Solar Empire – Save 50% Midweek Deal – 7,97 EUR
Real-time 4X space strategy at its finest. It’s very combat-oriented without the Diplomacy pack, but executes that combat very well. Might be my favorite 4X strategy game, but unfortunately doesn’t include a singleplayer campaign nor the Diplomacy & Entrenchment DLC packs. Still a definite must-have for keen strategy gamers. - S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Call of Pripyat Loyalty Edition – Save 40% Weekend Deal – 9,56 EUR
The best game in the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series, which puts you into the “Zone” around Chernobyl next to mutated creations, paranormal phenomenon and other crazy stuff. Great game, but this loyalty edition requires that you own S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Shadow of Chernobyl. The difference between loyalty and regular is in the pricing: loyalty is much lower priced to appeal to owners of SoC. - Storm Over the Pacific – Save 10% Pre-order Deal – 39,59 EUR

Combine the random loot and leveling system of Diablo with the frantic action of co-op Serious Sam and you get the first person shooter that is Borderlands. A huge world, thousands of randomly assembled weapons and four great characters make for a lot of fun. It has a few console touches, such as a poorly developed multiplayer browser, but it’s worth it nonetheless. Interestingly this reduced price is the same as Steam’s default price for Borderlands, so get it on whichever of these platforms you prefer. - Empire: Total War – Save 75% – 17,50 EUR
A great recent entry in the Total War turn-based/real-time strategy series, but you should get Steam’s mega pack deal at just 4 euro extra instead. - Mount and Blade + Warband Bundle – Save 10% – 53,95 EUR
Two excellent medieval life simulators, with Warband adding in 32-player multiplayer combat. Still, you’ll be better served simply purchasing Warband stand-alone, because Mount and Blade doesn’t really feature anything that Warband doesn’t improve upon. - Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell Conviction w/ Prima Guide – Save 4% – 59,95 EUR
An interesting new spy game in the Splinter Cell series that feature terrible DRM and comes in at a ridiculous price point. Can you say overpriced? I can. If you want this game, then get it somewhere else, because mostly any other service offers the Deluxe Edition for less than this. - Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell Conviction Deluxe Edition w/ Prima Guide – Save 4% – 64,95 EUR
Again: overpriced, get it somewhere – anywhere – else if you think you can stand the DRM. Note that connection issues are more frequent with Conviction than previous Ubisoft games (Settlers 7, Assassin’s Creed 2) with this DRM.
