The StarCraft 2 beta saw an enormous overhaul with patch 13 last friday, which included much more than just some balance changes and bug fixes. Blizzard also improved the matchmaking system, integrated Facebook functionality, unlocked 3v3/4v4 play and enabled UDP networking for improved game performance.

The list of changes is long and great, with a lot of long-awaited features and improvements that should have set the game on the road to launch. Unfortunately something went wrong, presumably with the UDP networking, because Battle.Net has been dropping people from games during the last few days. I’ve played numerous games in 1v1, 2v2 and 3v3, but managed to finish only a single short 1v1 game without getting dropped mid-game and the same story is repeated all over the forums.

Fortunately Blizzard is aware of the problem and working to find its cause and fix it. Not so fortunate is the fact that patch 13 also marked some major changes for the Zerg faction, which Blizzard isn’t getting any feedback on right now. With a deadline of May 31st for this phase of the beta I’m sure that’s not good news on their end, so hopefully they can resolve the connectivity issues soon. Still, it’s good that this happened now, so that Blizzard can resolve the issue before launch day, which really is the purpose of this beta test.
