Discount Drone Week 21 2010

An observant gamer can save a lot of money by frequently visiting digital download sites to check for new special offers. You can sometimes save as much as 80% on games with these deals, or even gain a free game for pre-ordering an upcoming title, which can quickly lead to a very healthy gaming collection at surprisingly little cost.

It’s a pain to constantly have to check all of these services for good deals however, so I’ll be doing that for you in this weekly feature! Short descriptions and recommendations are included per game. If the currency used on the site is not in euro (GamersGate and Good Old Games) then I convert the pricing at the current exchange rate.

Strategy gamers rejoice this week as Impulse has gone absolutely crazy on this front with countless awesome deals! Also be sure to check back in on GameDrone every week for a simple overview of all the special offers available on the wide variety of digital download services out there.

Deals of the Week

• Disciples 2 Gold on Good Old Games - Save 50% Weekend Deal – 4,01 EUR
  Think Heroes of Might & Magic with better combat and a much darker universe and you’re pretty close. Disciples 2 is widely regarded as (one of) the best fantasy turn-based strategy games ever and this pack includes all three of its expansion packs as well. Absolutely worth it at hundreds of hours of play time for just a few measly euro.
• Galactic Civilizations II: Ultimate Edition on Impulse – Save 66% - 8,08 EUR
  The entire Galactic Civilizations II series in one package, which makes for quite probably the ultimate turn-based 4X space strategy experience. Manage an empire and conquer the stars in whatever way you want.
• Gratuitous Space Battles Complete on Impulse – Save 50% Weekend Deal – 16,53 EUR
  In this indie space strategy game you get to design a fleet and set pre-battle orders, but cannot control the units during combat. It’s an awesome concept that works really well and offers some truly gratuitous space battles. Better yet, this pack includes the three expansion packs of The Order, The Swarm and The Tribes.
• Sins of a Solar Empire on Impulse - Save 80% Weekend Deal – 3,23 EUR
  At this price point there is no viable reason not to get this excellent real-time 4X space strategy game even though it doesn’t include the Diplomacy and Entrenchment expansion packs. It’s arguably the best combat-driven 4X strategy game to date and a definite must-have for keen strategy gamers.
• THQ Ultimate Bundle on Impulse – Save 85% Weekend Deal – 47,09 EUR
  An absolutely ridiculous must-have pack if you don’t yet own (m)any THQ games. Includes such excellent titles as the Red Faction series, Dawn of War 1 + expansions, Company of Heroes + expansions, Supreme Commander + expansions, Titan Quest + expansion and the original S.T.A.L.K.E.R.
• Warhammer 40.000: Dawn of War 2 Gold on Steam – Save 50% Weekend Deal – 27,49 EUR
  Dawn of War 2 and its Chaos Rising expansion pack are excellent real-time strategy games. The singleplayer campaign isn’t particularly amazing, but its heavily RPG inspired gameplay is enjoyable. Meanwhile the multiplayer component offers excellent fast-paced and agressive matches (even more-so than StarCraft 2), while shifting focus from base building to resource management.

Steam

• Alien Breed: Impact – Save 10% Pre-order Deal – 13,49 EUR
  A top-down 3D action game in which you get to eliminate thousands of aliens with big fucking guns. Includes a full singleplayer campaign, solo free mode, two-player co-op, online multiplayer and full Steam integration. It seems fairly promising, especially because the previous Xbox Arcade Alien Breed game was rather well received.
• BioShock 2 – Save 20% Patch Deal – 39,99 EUR
  The recent sequel to the critically acclaimed BioShock hasn’t been quite as positively received, but it’s still a very decent FPS. The recent release of the – not included – Rapture Metro DLC is what prompted this sale. Much better deals for this game can be found on regular webshops.
• Global Agenda – Save 25% Patch Deal – 22,49 EUR
  An instanced massively multiplayer third person shooter, with fairly decent gameplay. It has seen a lot of recent patches, which has prompted this sale. More actual MMOG content is promised for upcoming patches, such as open PvE zones, which should make for a more interesting game. Participation in Global Conquest requires a monthly fee and you should try the demo before you buy.
• Majesty 2 – Save 75% Launch Deal - 7,50 EUR
  A real-time strategy game without any form of direct unit control may sound like a bore, but can actually be a lot of fun. One of my favorite RTS games, but it’s not for everyone. It’s on sale due to the recent release of the Kingmaker expansion pack on Steam, which is not included in this deal.
• Railworks Add-ons – Save 25% Weekend Deal
  All add-ons for this train simulator are 25% off this weekend.
• Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell Elite Echelon Edition – Save 38% Weekend Deal – 49,99 EUR
  This pack contains the entire Splinter Cell with the exception of Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow. It even includes the digital deluxe edition of the latest entry: Splinter Cell: Conviction, which makes it a good deal for anyone who doesn’t own any of the games in this series of stealth action games yet.
• The Orange Box – Save 30% Mac Deal – 20,99 EUR
  This package of Valve games includes the entire Half Life 2 series, Portal and Team Fortress 2. As such it’s an absolute must-have, but it can be found at even lower prices in webshops nowadays. Not a very good deal for an excellent game pack.

Impulse

• Alganon – Save 50% – 16,13 EUR
  A high quality fantasy-based MMORPG that clearly follows in World of WarCraft’s footsteps, but features no monthly fee.
• Capcom Collection – Save 50% Weekend Deal – 64,67 EUR
  A bundle of five Capcom games for the PC. It contains the excellent Street Fighter IV, along with the smaller games of Flock! and Age of Booty. Also included are the mildly disappointing Dark Void and MotoGP08.
• Demigod – Save 50% – 8,08 EUR
  A strategic take on the popular new DotA subgenre. The launch issues have been resolved and it’s just a very solid strategic hero-control game now, but unfortunately not quite as popular as its competition (Heroes of Newerth and League of Legends).
• Hearts of Iron Mega Bundle – Save 50% Weekend Deal – 42,49 EUR
  A huge collection of 2D top-down global warfare games set in World War II.
• Hegemony: Philip of Macedon – Save 50% Launch Deal – 12,49 EUR
  A real-time strategic warfare game made by a very small team of developers that looks surprisingly good with an awesomely styled overmap and solid battle sequences. It recreates the conquest of Ancient Greece by Philip II, father of Alexander the Great. I’m not sure whether it’s a good strategy game, but it certainly looks the part.
• Storm Over the Pacific – Save 10% Pre-order Deal – 39,59 EUR
  There’s a better deal for this game on GamersGate.
• World War 2: Time of Wrath – Save 25% Weekend Deal – 20,24 EUR
  A World War 2 turn-based strategy game.

  A truck driving game.

  Another truck driving game.

  An upcoming arcade flight simulator set in the Pacific theatre of World War 2.

  An upcoming first person survival horror game.

  An excellent action/adventure game that features great graphics and a moderately interesting story, but gets very repetitive towards the latter half of the game. Well worth it at this price.
• Blaster Simulator – Save 50% Weekend Deal – 8,75 EUR
  Assume the role of a blaster and destroy building in this simulator game.
• Bungee Jumping Simulator – Save 50% Weekend Deal – 8,75 EUR
  Go bungee jumping without the deadly thrill of the real thing.
• City Life 2008 – Save 60% Weekend Deal – 4,21 EUR
  A city builder game similar to the Simcity series.
• Dark Void – Save 50% Weekend Deal – 17,54 EUR
  A mildly disappointing action game which features jetpacking through the skies and lots of shooting. Give the demo a go and see if it’s your cup of tea.
• Darkness Within: In Pursuit of Loath Nolder – Save 50% Weekend Deal – 5,23 EUR
  Solve the murder of Clark Field in this interactive detective game.
• Euro Truck Simulator – Save 50% Weekend Deal – 15,81 EUR
  A truck driving game in Europe.
• Freight Tycoon – Save 50% Weekend Deal – 7,58 EUR
  An economic management simulator.
• Heavyweight Transport Simulator – Save 50% Weekend Deal – 10,53 EUR

• Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands – Save 12% Pre-order Deal – 41,13 EUR
  The latest Prince of Persia game that takes place between The Sands of Time and Warrior Within of the second trilogy. There are better deals to be found for this upcoming game in most any regular web shop. Also keep in mind that it includes Ubisoft’s U-Play DRM, which requires a constant internet connection and for the Ubisoft servers to be up (which isn’t always the case).

  Become a lumberjack and learn how much hard work those WarCraft 3 peons really have to do in those intense RTS matches.

Direct2Drive (EU)

• Borderlands - Save 40% – 29,95 EUR
  Combine the random loot and leveling system of Diablo with the frantic action of co-op Serious Sam and you get the first person shooter that is Borderlands. A huge world, thousands of randomly assembled weapons and four great characters make for a lot of fun. It has a few console touches, such as a poorly developed multiplayer browser, but it’s worth it nonetheless. Interestingly this reduced price is the same as Steam’s default price for Borderlands, so get it on whichever of these platforms you prefer.
• Mount and Blade + Warband Bundle – Save 10% – 53,95 EUR
  Two excellent medieval life simulators, with Warband adding in 32-player multiplayer combat. Still, you’ll be better served simply purchasing Warband stand-alone, because Mount and Blade doesn’t really feature anything that Warband doesn’t improve upon.
• Westward Value Pack – Save 50% – 5,95 EUR
  A series of small wild west games in which you build a town and can go out adventuring in a simple 2D top-down environment.

Get Games

• Commandos Complete – Save 50% Weekend Deal - 7,49 EUR
  The entire Commandos series of limited-forces turn-based strategy games at a very acceptable price. Includes Commandos, Commandos 2, Commandos 3 and Strike Force as well as all the expansion packs.
• XIII Century Gold – Save 50% Weekend Deal – 12,49 EUR
  A very well-received strategy game set in the 13th century. It features gameplay very similar to the Total War series, with large-scale real-time battles.

Good Old Games

• Disciples: Sacred Lands Gold – Save 50% Weekend Deal – 4,01 EUR
  The entire Disciples fantasy turn-based strategy collection, which is good, but not quite as good as the Discipled 2 Gold pack.
• Jagged Alliance – Save 50% Weekend Deal - 4,01 EUR
  Take charge of a band of mercenaries in this top-down turn-based strategy game with gameplay similar to the Commandos series. An excellent limited-forces strategy game, but not as good as Jagged Alliance 2.
• Jagged Alliance 2 – Save 50% Weekend Deal – 4,01 EUR
  The very pinnacle of limited-forces turn-based strategy, surpassing even the Commandos franchise. You can’t call yourself  a gamer without having played Jagged Alliance 2 first.
• Jagged Alliance: Deadly Games – Save 50% Weekend Deal – 4,01 EUR
  Jagged Alliance with a multiplayer component. A definite improvement over Jagged Alliance and some even prefer it over Jagged Alliance 2.
