It was previously indicated that the StarCraft 2 beta would close up shop temporarily as of tomorrow, the 31st of May, but it looks like Blizzard has decided to extend the beta test by another week. This was almost certainly done in response to the dropping issue that was resolved a few days ago, but prevented testing for quite a while after patch 13 was released.

As of June 7th the Battle.Net service will no longer be accessible while Blizzard prepares it for StarCraft 2′s imminent launch on the 27th of July. Interestingly this will not be the end of the StarCraft 2 beta test, but merely an intermission, because the beta will go live for a few weeks again at some point closer to launch. There is no word as to whether current beta testers will have access, but that does seem to be the most likely scenario.

This reboot of the beta test shortly before the retail version comes out also seems to indicate that Blizzard intends to have a launch-day patch ready with last-minute balance changes and bug fixes. This wouldn’t be surprising coming from Blizzard, which has a track record of frequent patching post-launch. The level of polish and balance is already phenomenal and has been improving steadily with each beta patch, so I can only applaud an effort to further improve the game with quick post-launch patching.
