An observant gamer can save a lot of money by frequently visiting digital download sites to check for new special offers. You can sometimes save as much as 80% on games with these deals, or even gain a free game for pre-ordering an upcoming title, which can quickly lead to a very healthy gaming collection at surprisingly little cost.

It’s a pain to constantly have to check all of these services for good deals however, so I’ll be doing that for you in this weekly feature! Short descriptions and recommendations are included per game. If the currency used on the site is not in euro (GamersGate and Good Old Games) then I convert the pricing at the current exchange rate.

A free weekend of Shattered Horizon should tide all of you over, but there are countless other gems on sale this week. Also be sure to check back in on GameDrone every week for a simple overview of all the special offers available on the wide variety of digital download services out there.

Deals of the Week

  • Shattered Horizon on SteamFree Weekend and Save 50%9,99 EUR
In Shattered Horizon you get to float around in an astronaut suit and shoot at other people in three different game modes, across eight maps and with eight different weapons. As with any modern multiplayer shooter it also includes leaderboards and a leveling system, but no unlocks. All in all a great deal for a very good and original game, which offers a surprisingly believable take on futuristic astronaut warfare. Definitely give it a go if you have a DirectX 10 capable machine!
  • Supreme Commander 2 on Steam – Save 50% Weekend Deal – 16,49 EUR
This huge scale futuristic real-time strategy game has transformed with recent patches and according to some may even be better than the original. It’s certainly more accessible, faster and varied. That being said, I still miss some of those handy features, like timed move orders, and the experimental units have become too common. Either way it’s a great strategy game that you don’t want to pass up on, especially not at this price point. Get it.
  • The Witcher: Enhanced Edition: Director’s Cut on GamersGate - Save 50% Weekend Deal - 8,99 EUR
The best RPG since Baldur’s Gate 2, with an engaging story, tough moral dilemma’s with real consequences, fast-paced combat and memorable characters. It’s also based on an established dark and gritty Polish fantasy universe, which forms a very solid foundation for one of the greatest RPGs ever made. GamersGate makes no mention of the Enhanced Edition extras, so I presume that the retail extras (OST, inspired music, making-of videos, strategy guide, 50-page prequel/art booklet from Andrzej Sapkowski himself) aren’t included in this version.

Steam

  • Numen: Contest of Heroes – Save 10% Launch Deal - 17,99 EUR
A new isometric role-playing game, which seems very similar to Titan Quest in terms of its visual style. It’s a hack & slash game based on Greek mythology and promises varying environments and 80 unique skills and spells. Seems interesting, but I haven’t found any reviews yet nor tried it yet myself.

Impulse

  • Blood Bowl: Dark Elves Edition – Save 50% Weekend Deal – 24,99 EUR
A mixture of Warhammer and American Football produces a surprisingly fun, but complex, strategy game. It comes in a real-time strategy variant for fast-paced bloody action and a turn-based strategy variant that faithfully recreates the board game.
  • Determinance – Save 40% Weekend Deal – 8,38 EUR
An independently developed multiplayer swordfighting game. Its key features are flight and fully mouse-controlled swordfighting.
  • Heavyweight Transport Simulator – Save 40% Weekend Deal – 11,99 EUR
If you’ve always wanted to be a truck driver, then this is your game. Another option is to become a truck driver.
  • Indie Space Bundle – Save 50% Weekend Deal – 22,54 EUR
A combination pack of the relatively standard 4X space strategy game Armada 2526 and the rather unusual space colony-builder/strategy game mixture of Light of Altair. They’re both solid games that are entertaining enough.
  • Resident Evil 5 – Save 50% Weekend Deal - 18,99 EUR
Arguably the best entry in the Resident Evil franchise, with a lot of zombie killing action in an African setting. It also features 2 player co-op, making it a very good purchase if you like action games with zombies in them.
  • Sacraboar – Save 80% Weekend Deal – 3,99 EUR
A fast-paced real-time strategy game with minimal base building. Includes 89 missions, 18 difficulty levels and multiplayer functionality.
  • Simon the Sorceror 5 – Save 40% Weekend Deal – 12,80 EUR
The latest entry in the Simon the Sorceror series and not its best. It’s an adventure game in which you control a young sorceror and in this installment get to solve some alien trouble. Reviews indicate that it’s a mediocre adventure game.
  • Storm Over the Pacific – Save 10% Pre-order Deal – 39,59 EUR
There’s a better deal for this game on GamersGate.
  • THQ Ultimate Bundle – Save 66%104,34 EUR
An absolutely awesome deal if you don’t own any THQ games. Includes such excellent titles as the Red Faction series, Dawn of War 1 + expansion, Company of Heroes + expansions, Supreme Commander + expansions, Titan Quest + expansion and the original S.T.A.L.K.E.R.

GamersGate (UK)

  • Air Aces Pacific – Save 5% Pre-order Deal - 39,90 EUR
An upcoming arcade flight simulator set in the Pacific theatre of World War 2.
  • Amnesia: The Dark Descent – Save 10% Pre-order Deal – 14,- EUR
An upcoming first person survival horror game.
  • Battlefield: Bad Company 2 – Save 29% Weekend Deal – 30,03 EUR
One of the most popular multiplayer first person shooters and rightfully so. It combines a decent singleplayer campaign with stellar graphics, destructable terrain and Battlefield’s hallmark combination of vehicular and infantry combat. Intense multiplayer action with semi-realistic gunplay and dedicated servers makes this one game that’s hard to miss. Most certainly worth it.
  • Bob Came in Pieces – Save 50% Weekend Deal – 3,89 EUR
Bob has crash landed on a planet and needs to find missing parts to fix his ship and escape. In this colorful puzzle-adventure game, you’ll actually need to rebuild Bob’s ship to different shapes and sizes in order to solve some of the puzzles.
  • Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena – Save 50% Weekend Deal – 11,98 EUR
Strangely these games are much better than the movie they were based on. Assault on Dark Athena also includes the original Escape From Butcher Bay, which makes this a pretty good deal. Both games are known for good action gameplay with a decent singleplayer campaign. Do keep in mind that the original is generally considered to be better than Dark Athena.
  • Command & Conquer 4: Tiberian Twilight – Save 43% Weekend Deal – 23,97 EUR
The latest entry in the C&C franchise and a very poor one at that. In innovating the gameplay it not only alienates itself from the C&C franchise and its fans, but also fails to provide any form of enjoyable strategy gameplay as a stand-alone experience. It tries to emulate the success of Dawn of War 2, but ends up ranking along the likes of Tom Clancy’s Endwar and Stormrise. See also my summary of what’s wrong with C&C 4′s singleplayer campaign. Definitely not worth it.
  • Crusader Kings Complete – Save 60% Weekend Deal - 7,19 EUR
A medieval real-time grand strategy game based on the Europa Universalis engine.
  • Emberwind – Save 50% Weekend Deal – 5,97 EUR
    A sidescrolling platformer.
  • Europa Universalis 3 Complete – Save 60% Weekend Deal – 12,10 EUR
A grand strategy game along with two if its expansion packs. It spans the eras from 1399 to 1820 and includes 250 historically accurate countries.
  • Europa Universalis 3: Heir to the Throne – Save 60% Weekend Deal – 7,19 EUR
The latest expansion to Europa Universalis 3, which adds several new gameplay features.
  • Europa Universalis Rome Gold – Save 60% Weekend Deal – 7,19 EUR
A grand strategy game set in the Roman era. Includes the Vae Victis expansion pack.
  • Hearts of Iron 2 Complete – Save 60% Weekend Deal – 12,- EUR
Grand strategy in World War 2. Includes the Armaggedon and Doomsday expansion packs.
  • Imperii – Save 50% Weekend Deal – 2,97 EUR
A tower defense game with a very minimalistic look.
  • King’s Legacy – Save 30% Pre-order Deal – 6,68 EUR
A cutesy real-time strategy game in which you can build a small village, explore the world and defeat other settlements.
  • Mass Effect 2 Digital Deluxe – Save 33% Weekend Deal – 36,- EUR
This first person shooter/role-playing mix is one of the best games released this year and belongs in any gamer’s collection. The Digital Deluxe edition includes a special armor set, assault rifle, art book, OST, comic and making-of video. It’s too bad that collector armors are rarely used in ME2, because their helmets cannot be removed.
  • Mass Effect 2 – Save 43% Weekend Deal – 23,97 EUR
This first person shooter/role-playing mix is one of the best games released this year and belongs in any gamer’s collection.
  • Mirror’s Edge – Save 25% Weekend Deal – 13,51 EUR
A new IP from DICE (Battlefield) that innovates in the first-person shooter genre. It’s a first-person game in which running and acrobatics are key and accompanied by occassional shooting segments. The story isn’t particularly impressive, the cutscenes detract from the atmosphere and the shooting segments are inferior, but otherwise it’s an excellent game that’s well worth the price GamersGate is asking. I certainly liked it.
  • Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands – Save 12% Pre-order Deal – 42,- EUR
The latest Prince of Persia game that takes place between The Sands of Time and Warrior Within of the second trilogy. There are better deals to be found for this upcoming game in most any regular web shop. Also keep in mind that it includes Ubisoft’s U-Play DRM, which requires a constant internet connection and for the Ubisoft servers to be up (which isn’t always the case).
  • Puzzle Bots – Save 10% Pre-order Deal – 10,76 EUR
    An upcoming 2D puzzle game.
  • Storm Over the Pacific – Save 10% Pre-order Deal – 37,79 EUR
A World War II wargame featuring the pacific conflict.
  • The Saboteur – Save 43% Weekend Deal – 23,97 EUR
World War 2 may be a done deal for many gamers, but this is one game that’s worth making an exception for. A third-person shooter in occupied Paris with stylish graphics makes for an excellent game, especially once you realize that it’s a GTA-style open-world experience.
  • Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter – Save 50% Weekend Deal – 4,18 EUR
A decent tactical shooter. It falls in the love it or hate it category, so try before you buy. Still a very good deal if you like tactical shooters with semi-realistic gameplay.
  • Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter 2 – Save 50% Weekend Deal – 4,77 EUR
A decent follow-up to Advanced Warfighter, but it suffers from a similarly weak story and horrible AI problems. Also features ads in-game. Supposedly still a decent tactical shooter, but be prepared to deal with shitty teammates.
  • Victoria Complete – Save 60% Weekend Deal – 7,19 EUR
A critically acclaimed grand strategy game that lets you lead a country from the 19th century into the 20th. The included expansion pack actually ties in to Hearts of Iron 2 – Doomsday, so Victoria: Revolutions games can be continued in HoI2.
  • World in Conflict Complete Edition – Save 50% Weekend Deal – 12,- EUR
An innovative take on the real-time strategy genre by RTS masters Massive Entertainment (Ground Control). Pick a class (infantry, armored, air, support) and order in some units, then conquer control nodes to win battles. It sounds simple, but especially in multiplayer it can be a very complex and intense affair. It features a full-fledged multiplayer system with leveling, match-making, drop-in matches and leaderboards. More importantly, it’s singleplayer campaign is quite possibly the most engaging singleplayer campaign in RTS history, with varied gameplay objectives and excellent in-engine cutscenes. This complete edition also switches back and forth between American and Soviet sides during the Soviet invasion of the United States of America in 1989 (fictional, obviously). This is not a very good deal however, because World in Conflict Complete can be had for less in regular webshops.

Direct2Drive (EU)

  • Borderlands - Save 40%29,95 EUR
Combine the random loot and leveling system of Diablo with the frantic action of co-op Serious Sam and you get the first person shooter that is Borderlands. A huge world, thousands of randomly assembled weapons and four great characters make for a lot of fun. It has a few console touches, such as a poorly developed multiplayer browser, but it’s worth it nonetheless. Interestingly this reduced price is the same as Steam’s default price for Borderlands, so get it on whichever of these platforms you prefer.
  • Mount and Blade + Warband Bundle – Save 10%53,95 EUR
Two excellent medieval life simulators, with Warband adding in 32-player multiplayer combat. Still, you’ll be better served simply purchasing Warband stand-alone, because Mount and Blade doesn’t really feature anything that Warband doesn’t improve upon.
  • Warfare – Save 80% This Week – 3,95 EUR
A real-time strategy game featuring a fictional conflict in Saudi Arabia and modern technology.

Get Games

  • Real Warfare 1242 – Save 45% Preorder Deal - 27,99 EUR
This deal also includes XII Century: Blood of Europe. Both are medieval wargames with large-scale combat. Real Warfare 1242 comes with activation-limited DRM.
  • Rig ‘N’ Roll – Save 50% Weekend Deal – 14,99 EUR
    A truck driving game.
  • Theatre of War 2: Kursk 1943 – Save 30% Preorder Deal - 27,99 EUR
This deal also includes a free copy of Stalingrad. Both are real-time tactical wargames, which means there’s no base building and a lot of intense World War 2 combat.

Good Old Games

  • Beyond Good and Evil - Save 25% Weekend Deal - 6,15 EUR
An action adventure masterpiece that unfortunately sold miserably in its time. Now you can get it for cheap – and you should!
  • Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time – Save 25% Weekend Deal – 6,15 EUR
Great timing with the Sands of Time movie now airing in movie theatres worldwide. This is the first part of the second trilogy of Prince of Persia games, with excellent platforming gameplay and decent combat. Get it if you haven’t played it yet.
  • Psychonauts – Save 25% Weekend Deal – 6,15 EUR
Yet another game that undersold at launch yet is loved by anyone who touches it. An action adventure game that any gamer ought to have.
