Deus Ex was an epic futuristic shooter with open-ended gameplay, extensive character development and quite possibly the most compelling and interactive game plot to date. It was years ahead of its time and a critical success, going so far as to win more than 30 Game of the Year awards and being named Best Game Ever by PC Gamer in 2007.
The reason for this little history lesson is a newly released trailer of Square Enix’s upcoming prequel Deus Ex: Human Revolution. I wouldn’t ordinarily write a post for a game trailer, but this CGI trailer may well be the best game trailer ever made and just begs to be seen. Head below the fold for the embedded trailer, which is also available in full 1080p glory on YouTube.
The trailer is appropriately titled “They Can’t Stop The Future” and introduces the protagonist Adam Jensen. It’s the year 2027 and he’s in the employ of Sarif Industries, which is the leading company in human augmentation technology and is subject to terrorist attacks and mass protests orchestrated by shadow organizations. It’s a future of conspiracy theories turned reality (Illuminati, Majestic 12) and human empowerment by means of technology, which looks to be an excellent game setting yet again.
Unfortunately, regardless of how awesome this trailer is, it’s still just a CGI video. It doesn’t provide any gameplay details and at best serves as a mild indication of what kind of technology and atmosphere we might expect from the game itself. At least in this regard the new Eidos Montreal team looks set to capture the classic Deus Ex cyberpunk feel, but for all the rest (gameplay, storytelling and quality) we’ll have to wait until early 2011 when the game is due out in stores worldwide.
One last interesting thing to note is that Eidos Montreal seems to have stuck to the setting. The biomechanical augmentations seem like a primitive first step towards the fancy nanotechnology of the previous games. It also captures the Deus Ex feel, with the characteristic trench coat and fancy conspiracy theories. As a result this video doesn’t look like a trailer for a full series reboot, but a genuine prequel to Deus Ex, however good or bad it may turn out to be…
