An observant gamer can save a lot of money by frequently visiting digital download sites to check for new special offers. You can sometimes save as much as 80% on games with these deals, or even gain a free game for pre-ordering an upcoming title, which can quickly lead to a very healthy gaming collection at surprisingly little cost.
It’s a pain to constantly have to check all of these services for good deals however, so I’ll be doing that for you in this weekly feature! Short descriptions and recommendations are included per game. If the currency used on the site is not in euro (GamersGate and Good Old Games) then I convert the pricing at the current exchange rate.
And even if you don’t buy anything, then be sure to at least check out the Team Fortress 2 free weekend! Also be sure to check back in on GameDrone every week for a simple overview of all the special offers available on the wide variety of digital download services out there.
Deals of the Week
- Bethesda Weekend on Steam – Save 40% Weekend Deal – 88,48 EUR
A pack consisting of Game of the Year editions of Morrowind, Oblivion and Fallout 3 when you pre-order Fallout: New Vegas. It’s a surprisingly good deal, because all of these older games are still ridiculously expensive today. They also include all the DLC and expansion packs for these titles, so that adds even further value. However, it’s crucial that you try these games before you buy because they’re definitely not for everyone. - Team Fortress 2 on Steam – Free Weekend and Save 50% – 9,99 EUR
A great class-based multiplayer shooter game with a cartoony look. It’s quite possibly the most accessible multiplayer game ever created and also one of the largest and most varied ones due to the constant free content updates. It even includes a RPG-style item drop system to unlock new items and weaponry for your classes. Now on sale due to the new Mac release.
Steam
- Eversion – Save 10% Launch Deal – 3,59 EUR
A new retro-style platformer with achievements, leaderboards, three different endings and more. Seems like a decent game for platformer fans, especially for this price. - Fallout 3: Game of the Year Edition – Save 50% Weekend Deal – 24,99 EUR
Explore a post-apocalyptic America with different factions vying for control and first-person RPG gameplay. It’s technically a Fallout game, but in truth is much more reminiscent of Bethesda’s Oblivion, but with guns instead of swords. This version also includes all five DLC packs for Fallout 3, which makes it a very good deal. - Metro 2033 – Save 50% Weekend Deal – 17,49 EUR
An epic tale of survival in a post-apocalyptic Moscow where everyone lives in the city’s subway system. It initially seems a bit like S.T.A.L.K.E.R. due to the gritty design and setting, but it’s actually a much more directed and action-packed experience. - Numen: Contest of Heroes – Save 10% Launch Deal - 17,99 EUR
A new isometric role-playing game, which seems very similar to Titan Quest in terms of its visual style. It’s a hack & slash game based on Greek mythology and promises varying environments and 80 unique skills and spells. Seems interesting, but I haven’t found any reviews nor tried it yet myself. - The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind: Game of the Year Edition – Save 75% Weekend Deal – 5,- EUR
It is one of the largest and most open RPG experiences ever created and considered by most to be the best title in the Elder Scrolls franchise. It also contains the Tribunal and Bloodmoon expansion packs. - The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion: Game of the Year Edition Deluxe - Save 66% Weekend Deal – 8,50 EUR
The most recent and most successfull Elder Scrolls game. A medieval RPG, with a wide-open world and utterly forgettable main story, that was dumbed down on many fronts in comparison to its predecessor. This version includes all Oblivion DLC, contrary to the regular Game of the Year edition.
Impulse
- Devil May Cry 4 – Save 50% Weekend Deal – 7,49 EUR
A fast-paced action game with a decent story and excellent gameplay. However, you might want to play this with a controller. - East India Company – Save 25% Weekend Deal - 22,49 EUR
A Total War style empire management game centering around the East India Company. It’s generally considered to be an okay game and it includes all three DLC packs. - Indie Strategy Bundle – Save 50% Weekend Deal – 12,35 EUR
A combo-pack of two space games. It includes Flotilla, a 3D space strategy game with randomly generated universes, configurable ships and tactical space combat. Also included is Space Rangers 2, which is a unique and excellent top down mixture of space simulator, strategy game and role-playing game. Definitely a great deal, if only for Space Rangers 2! - Sacraboar – Save 80% Weekend Deal – 3,99 EUR
A fast-paced real-time strategy game with minimal base building. Includes 89 missions, 18 difficulty levels and multiplayer functionality. - Scorpion: Disfigured – Save 40% Weekend Deal – 9,88 EUR
A mediocre futuristic first person shooter. - Sherlock Holmes: The Awakened – Save 35% Weekend Deal – 12,99 EUR
A decent point-and-click adventure with Sherlock Holmes. - Sherlock Holmes Versus Arsene Lupin – Save 35% Weekend Deal – 12,99 EUR
Yet another Sherlock Holmes themed adventure game. - Sherlock Holmes Versus Jack the Ripper – Save 35% Weekend Deal - 19,49 EUR
The most recent of Sherlock Holmes point-and-click adventure games. - Storm Over the Pacific – Save 10% Pre-order Deal – 39,59 EUR
There’s a better deal for this game on GamersGate. - THQ Ultimate Bundle – Save 66% – 104,34 EUR
An absolutely awesome deal if you don’t own any THQ games. Includes such excellent titles as the Red Faction series, Dawn of War 1 + expansion, Company of Heroes + expansions, Supreme Commander + expansions, Titan Quest + expansion and the original S.T.A.L.K.E.R. - Titan Quest Gold – Save 50% Weekend Deal – 14,99 EUR
A fair deal for an excellent hack & slash RPG and it’s expansion pack. Definitely worth it if you don’t own them yet!
GamersGate (UK)
- Air Aces Pacific – Save 5% Pre-order Deal - 40,35 EUR
An upcoming arcade flight simulator set in the Pacific theatre of World War 2. - Amnesia: The Dark Descent – Save 10% Pre-order Deal – 14,16 EUR
An upcoming first person survival horror game. - Anno 1701 Gold Edition – Save 50% This Week – 15,17 EUR
Develop your own city from the ground up, while defending it from outside threats. An excellent city management and strategic warfare game similar to Settlers. Also includes the Sunken Dragon expansion pack, making this a very good deal indeed. - Command & Conquer 4: Tiberian Twilight – Save 43% This Week – 24,25 EUR
The latest entry in the C&C franchise and a very poor one at that. In innovating the gameplay it not only alienates itself from the C&C franchise and its fans, but also fails to provide any form of enjoyable strategy gameplay as a stand-alone experience. It tries to emulate the success of Dawn of War 2, but ends up ranking along the likes of Tom Clancy’s Endwar and Stormrise. See also my summary of what’s wrong with C&C 4′s singleplayer campaign. Definitely not worth it. - Condemned: Criminal Origins – Save 50% This Week – 6,04 EUR
A first person survival horror game in which you’re a FBI agent chasing down the worst that mankind has to offer. - Dark Void – Save 33% This Week – 24,25 EUR

There’s a better deal for this excellent action game over at Impulse. - Eufloria – Save 50% This Week – 9,09 EUR
An atmospheric indie game that mixes GalCon style planetary conquest with tower defense gameplay. - Flock! - Save 30% This Week – 8,50 EUR
Herd flocks of sheep towards the goal with your UFO in this interesting puzzle game. - Future Wars – Save 50% This Week - 9,08 EUR
A futuristic turn-based strategy game with gameplay similar to that of Advanced Wars. Seems well worth a look. - GearGrinder – Save 50% This Week – 16,40 EUR
This truck racing game incorporates truck upgrades and weaponry to spice things up. - Greed: Black Border – Save 50% This Week – 9,08 EUR
A decent top-down alien shooter. - King’s Legacy – Save 30% Pre-order Deal – 6,76 EUR
A cutesy real-time strategy game in which you can build a small village, explore the world and defeat other settlements. - Lost Planet: Extreme Condition: Colonies Edition – Save 39% This Week – 9,66 EUR
A good third person shooter with great graphics, cool mechs and a halfway decent storyline. A definite must-have if you like mechs and futuristic shooters, otherwise it’s just a solid choice. - Mass Effect 2 Digital Deluxe – Save 33% – 36,40 EUR
This first person shooter/role-playing mix is one of the best games released this year and belongs in any gamer’s collection. The Digital Deluxe edition includes a special armor set, assault rifle, art book, OST, comic and making-of video. It’s too bad that collector armors are rarely used in ME2, because their helmets cannot be removed. - Mass Effect 2 – Save 43% – 24,25 EUR
This first person shooter/role-playing mix is one of the best games released this year and belongs in any gamer’s collection. - MotoGP 08 – Save 50% This Week – 18,17 EUR
A motor racing game. - NBA 2K10 – Save 66% This Week – 12,37 EUR
A good new addition to EA’s NBA basketball game franchise. - Puzzle Bots – Save 10% Pre-order Deal – 10,88 EUR

Hunt zombies in the desert in this excellent third person shooter. - S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Call of Pripyat – Save 30% This Week – 21,22 EUR
The latest and greatest entry in the celebrated S.T.A.L.K.E.R. franchise. Explore The Zone around the Chernobyl disaster area filled with competing factions, mutated creatures and strange anomalies. A great deal for a great game, which also happens to be one of the first games with DirectX 11 support. - S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Call of Pripyat: Loyalty Edition – Save 50% This Week – 9,08 EUR
A much less expensive version of this game for owners of either one of the previous S.T.A.L.K.E.R. games. - S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Clear Sky – Save 60% This Week – 3,86 EUR
A decent prequel to the original Shadow of Chernobyl that introduces faction conflicts and a variety of other new features. Generally considered to be the worst game in the series. - S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Shadow of Chernobyl – Save 50% This Week – 6,04 EUR
The game that started it all with its incredible depiction of a mutated nuclear wasteland that is largely true to the real Chernobyl disaster area. Many patches and user mods have turned what once was a very buggy game at launch into a solid game that begs to be experienced. - Storm Over the Pacific – Save 10% Pre-order Deal – 38,22 EUR
A World War II wargame featuring the pacific conflict. - Street Figher IV – Save 33% This Week – 24,25 EUR
An excellent sidescrolling fighting game. It unfortunately doesn’t improve on any of the many faults in the genre, but it does provide just about the best fighting game experience that you can get on the PC nowadays. - The Saboteur – Save 43% - 24,25 EUR
World War 2 may be a done deal for many gamers, but this is one game that’s worth making an exception for. A third-person shooter in occupied Paris with stylish graphics makes for an excellent game, especially once you realize that it’s a GTA-style open-world experience. - Twin Sector – Save 50% This Week – 7,86 EUR
A very poorly received first person adventure game. Penumbra and Portal are much better options in this genre.
Direct2Drive (EU)
- Borderlands - Save 40% – 29,95 EUR
Combine the random loot and leveling system of Diablo with the frantic action of co-op Serious Sam and you get the first person shooter that is Borderlands. A huge world, thousands of randomly assembled weapons and four great characters make for a lot of fun. It has a few console touches, such as a poorly developed multiplayer browser, but it’s worth it nonetheless. Interestingly this reduced price is the same as Steam’s default price for Borderlands, so get it on whichever of these platforms you prefer. - Football Manager 2010 – Save 65% This Week – 17,50 EUR
A very good deal for this excellent football management game. And just in time for the world cup! - Warfare – Save 80% This Week – 3,95 EUR
A real-time strategy game featuring a fictional conflict in Saudi Arabia and modern technology.
Good Old Games

Old-school first person RPGs set in the “The Dark Eye” franchise, like the more recent Drakensang. - Realms of Arkania 3 – Save 30% Weekend Deal – 3,46 EUR
The superior sequel to the aforementioned games, with similar old-school first person RPG gameplay. - Warlords Battlecry 3 – Save 30% Weekend Deal – 5,77 EUR
A solid mixture of real-time strategy and role-playing game elements.
