An observant gamer can save a lot of money by frequently visiting digital download sites to check for new special offers. You can sometimes save as much as 80% on games with these deals, or even gain a free game for pre-ordering an upcoming title, which can quickly lead to a very healthy gaming collection at surprisingly little cost.
It’s a pain to constantly have to check all of these services for good deals however, so I’ll be doing that for you in this weekly feature! Short descriptions and recommendations are included per game. If the currency used on the site is not in euro (GamersGate and Good Old Games) then I convert the pricing at the current exchange rate.
Also be sure to check back in on GameDrone every week for a simple overview of all the special offers available on the wide variety of digital download services out there.
Deals of the Week
- Prey on GamersGate – Save 51% Weekend Deal – 2,92 EUR
In Prey you’re Tommy, a Cherokee garage mechanic who gets sucked into an alien spaceship along with his girlfriend and people. The story is a tad over the top, but even so the short, six hour, singleplayer campaign is well worth a playthrough. It also includes multiplayer, but that’s not much fun, nor very popular, in Prey. Definitely a worthwhile purchase at this price for its singleplayer experience. - Sam & Max: Beyond Time and Space on GamersGate - Save 50% Weekend Deal – 11,93 EUR
The entire second season of this excellently renewed adventure game series by Telltale games. A great deal for five short (3-4 hour per episode), but enjoyable, adventure games.
Steam
- Dogfighter – Save 25% Launch Deal – 10,49 EUR
An arcade flight action game with plane models inspired by World War 2 fighters. It has both singleplayer against bots and multiplayer modes, but the controls on both mouse and gamepad are very cumbersome and oddly it doesn’t come with joystick support. - Numen: Contest of Heroes – Save 10% Launch Deal - 17,99 EUR
A new isometric role-playing game, which seems very similar to Titan Quest in terms of its visual style. It’s a hack & slash game based on Greek mythology and promises varying environments and 80 unique skills and spells. Seems interesting, but I haven’t found any reviews nor tried it yet myself.
Impulse
- CID The Dummy – Save 30% Weekend Deal – 6,93 EUR
A platform game involving a Crash Test Dummy. - Lost Planet: Extreme Condition: Colonies Edition – Save 50% Weekend Deal – 7,49 EUR
A good third person shooter with great graphics, cool mechs and a halfway decent storyline. A definite must-have if you like mechs and futuristic shooters, otherwise it’s just a solid choice. - Making History II w/ Making History Bonus – Save 35% Pre-order Deal – 32,28 EUR
An upcoming turn-based grand strategy game set in the second World War. It also includes Making History Gold and beta access to Making History II. - Out of the Park 11 – Save 50% Weekend Deal – 19,99 EUR
A baseball simulator in which you can manage a baseball team through any historical season from 1871 to 2009 or even compete in online leagues. - SkyScraper Simulator – Save 40% Weekend Deal - 11,99 EUR
Oversee the building of a wide variety of skyscrapers. - THQ Ultimate Bundle – Save 66% – 104,34 EUR
An absolutely awesome deal if you don’t own any THQ games. Includes such excellent titles as the Red Faction series, Dawn of War 1 + expansion, Company of Heroes + expansions, Supreme Commander + expansions, Titan Quest + expansion and the original S.T.A.L.K.E.R.
GamersGate (UK)
- Air Aces Pacific – Save 5% Pre-order Deal - 39,74 EUR
An upcoming arcade flight simulator set in the Pacific theatre of World War 2. - Alien Nations – Save 49% Weekend Deal – 2,72 EUR
A strategic city simulator game that is very similar to Settlers 3, but not quite as good. It features three very different alien races who mysteriously can only use medieval equipment such as swords and bows and arrows. - Amnesia: The Dark Descent – Save 10% Pre-order Deal – 13,95 EUR
An upcoming first person survival horror game. - Anno 1404 (Dawn of Discovery) – Save 50% Weekend Deal – 20,95 EUR
The latest and arguably greatest entry in the popular Anno franchise of city-builder strategy games. It’s an excellent game, but unfortunately lacks multiplayer, which was introduced in the – not included – Venice expansion pack, and comes with an activation limit enforced by Tages DRM. - Bob Came in Pieces – Save 50% Weekend Deal - 3,88 EUR
Bob has crash landed on a planet and needs to find missing parts to fix his ship and escape. In this colorful puzzle-adventure game, you’ll actually need to rebuild Bob’s ship to different shapes and sizes in order to solve some of the puzzles. - Command & Conquer 4: Tiberian Twilight – Save 43% – 23,88 EUR
The latest entry in the C&C franchise and a very poor one at that. In innovating the gameplay it not only alienates itself from the C&C franchise and its fans, but also fails to provide any form of enjoyable strategy gameplay as a stand-alone experience. It tries to emulate the success of Dawn of War 2, but ends up ranking along the likes of Tom Clancy’s Endwar and Stormrise. See also my summary of what’s wrong with C&C 4′s singleplayer campaign. Definitely not worth it. - Dark Void – Save 33% – 23,88 EUR
A mediocre futuristic action game which has you strapping on a jetpack and flying through alien environments in a parallel universe. - Devil May Cry 4 – Save 39% - 9,51 EUR
There’s a better deal for this excellent action game over at Impulse. - Flock! - Save 30% – 8,37 EUR
Herd flocks of sheep towards the goal with your UFO in this interesting puzzle game. - Lost Planet: Extreme Condition: Colonies Edition – Save 39% This Week – 9,52 EUR
There’s a better deal for this solid third person shooter over at Impulse. - Mass Effect 2 – Save 43% – 23,88 EUR
This first person shooter/role-playing mix is one of the best games released this year and belongs in any gamer’s collection. - Mass Effect 2 Digital Deluxe – Save 33% – 35,85 EUR
This first person shooter/role-playing mix is one of the best games released this year and belongs in any gamer’s collection. The Digital Deluxe edition includes a special armor set, assault rifle, art book, OST, comic and making-of video. It’s too bad that collector armors are rarely used in ME2, because their helmets cannot be removed. - MotoGP 08 – Save 50% – 17,89 EUR
A motor racing game. - Oddworld Pack – Save 50% Weekend Deal – 4,15 EUR
Includes both Abe’s Exodus and Abe’s Oddysee for a heavy dose of action-platformer fun. Both games are also available in separate 50% off deals. - Perimeter: Emperor’s Testament – Save 60% Weekend Deal – 4,29 EUR
This first Perimeter game is a highly original futuristic strategy game that includes planetary terraforming and transformable units. It takes a fair bit of patience and is a tad complex, but certainly worth your time if you like intricate strategy games. - Puzzle Bots – Save 10% Pre-order Deal – 10,71 EUR
An upcoming 2D puzzle game. - Resident Evil 5 – Save 33% - 23,88 EUR
Hunt zombies in the desert in this excellent third person shooter. - Shadowgrounds: Bundle Pack – Save 50% Weekend Deal - 11,93 EUR
The best top-down shooters thus far, with a decent storyline, multiple characters, many crazy weapons and tons of aliens to kill. Includes both Shadowgrounds and Shadowgrounds: Survivor, which are also available in separate 50% off deals. Survivor is the better of the two, but both are excellent games that are well worth playing through. - Street Figher IV – Save 33% – 23,88 EUR
An excellent sidescrolling fighting game. It unfortunately doesn’t improve on any of the many faults in the genre, but it does provide just about the best fighting game experience that you can get on the PC nowadays. - The Nations Gold – Save 50% Weekend Deal – 5,35 EUR
Another city-builder strategy game similar to Settlers 3, with amazons and aliens. It’s the sequel to Alien Nations. - The Saboteur – Save 43% - 23,88 EUR
World War 2 may be a done deal for many gamers, but this is one game that’s worth making an exception for. A third-person shooter in occupied Paris with stylish graphics makes for an excellent game, especially once you realize that it’s a GTA-style open-world experience. - UFO: Extraterrestrials – Save 60% Weekend Deal – 4,29 EUR
Build and improve a space colony while fighting off alien incursions with a squad of marines. - UFO Trilogy – Save 50% Weekend Deal – 10,76 EUR
A trilogy of games that combine tactical squad action and strategic base building as humanity is forced to fight off alien invaders. - Universe at War: Earth Assault – Save 75% Weekend Deal - 4,46 EUR
A solid real-time strategy game by Petroglyph (ex-Westwood, Star Wars: Empire at War). It features three alien races that fight for control over the Earth, with humanity relegated to cheap footsoldiers and resources. It didn’t get great reviews, but it’s a decent RTS that’s certainly worth having at this price. - X-Com Complete Pack - Save 60% Weekend Deal - 4,76 EUR
An older series of celebrated squad-based turn-based strategy games in which your marines fight off alien incursions on Earth. Also included are a shooter (Enforcer) and arcade space sim (Interceptor). It includes all five X-Com games, which are also available in separate 50% off deals this weekend.
Direct2Drive (EU)
- BioShock – Save 50% – 9,95 EUR
What was supposed to be an underwater paradise has turned into a failing city with roaming monsters that were once humans. A substance called adam allowed them to improve themselves, but eventually drove them mad. So you crashland in the middle of the ocean and set out to save the day, while collecting weapons and Adam-powered abilities. It’s got enjoyable and varied gameplay and a gripping storyline, but suffers a bit from relatively easy encounters and linearity. - BioShock 1 + 2 Bundle - Save 10% – 59,95 EUR
A bundle consisting of BioShock and its solid sequel. Two good games, but this bundle is still woefully overpriced. - Borderlands - Save 40% – 29,95 EUR
Combine the random loot and leveling system of Diablo with the frantic action of co-op Serious Sam and you get the first person shooter that is Borderlands. A huge world, thousands of randomly assembled weapons and four great characters make for a lot of fun. It has a few console touches, such as a poorly developed multiplayer browser, but it’s worth it nonetheless. Interestingly this reduced price is the same as Steam’s default price for Borderlands, so get it on whichever of these platforms you prefer. - Condemned: Criminal Origins – Save 75% Weekend Deal – 2,50 EUR
A first person survival horror game in which you’re a FBI agent chasing down the worst that mankind has to offer.
