It’s taken a few months but I’ve now finally completed both WarCraft 3: Reign of Chaos and The Frozen Throne singleplayer campaigns in hard mode. I had already finished the regular real-time strategy missions this weekend, but The Frozen Throne also shipped with three massive RPG acts that form the Orc campaign, which took a while longer to complete than I had expected.
A lot of events leading up to the state of the world in World of WarCraft is simply left untouched by WarCraft 3, which was a little disappointing. The Orc campaign of The Frozen Throne was a nice surprise though, with it filling in a lot of the blanks in how the Horde settled down in Kalimdor and expanded to include the Tauren and Trolls.
More importantly, the missions were fun and varied, especially in The Frozen Throne. The human campaign in particular, with its bonus tower defense mission and its DotA-inspired rescue mission. Still, the undead campaign proved more interesting than the Human and Night Elf ones, with it expanding on the most intruiging characters: Arthas and Sylvanas. That and the undead and orcs are simply more interesting to play, especially with the awesome Crypt Lord hero introduced in TFT!
All in all, definitely worth a playthrough if you’ve never finished them before, but a bit too lengthy and linear to play through twice. And it’s unfortunate that The Frozen Throne didn’t have as many cool CGI cutscenes as Reign of Chaos did.
