Content Designer Matthew Medina talks a bit about languages in Guild Wars 2 on the ArenaNet blog. Some of you may remember the runic sign posts, tablets and plaques of the original game and it looks like ArenaNet will expand greatly upon this lore-driven feature in Guild Wars 2. Indeed, Guild Wars 2 will contain several original written languages, both newly introduced languages and those seen in the original game.
It’s a nice extra touch that should serve to make the world of Tyria all the more believable. New Krytan is the new common script of all the allied races, which you’ve probably already seen in a few screenshots. And the Charr invention of the printing press ensures that it’ll be commonplace in Guild Wars 2. But Asuran, Ascalonian, Canthan and Old Krytan can still be found in places, as well as other, much older, scripts.
This will undoubtedly be good news for lore-hungry Guild Wars fans, who should also check out the bit of background lore for the New Krytan language included in Medina’s post, but they promise not to go overboard. Translating these scripts will never be required to advance and they promise not to go overboard. Guild Wars 2 should still be an understandable and accessible game for all comers, not just those who have a linguistics degree.
