Responses to the Medal of Honor beta got me thinking about the various kinds of gaming, from straight-up singleplayer to online-only massively multiplayer gaming.

Some people adamantly refuse to buy a game if it doesn’t have a solid multiplayer component, whereas others stubbornly refuse to go online. There are even gamers who rarely play anything if it’s not at a LAN party and those who’ve taken to solely playing co-op games.

I find it interesting that there are so many differing opinions on this topic, most of all because I actually have no real preference between any of them. But I’m sure that many of you do, so I’m posting up a new poll which asks: “How do you prefer to play?”. It’s possible to select up to three answers.

Be sure to leave a vote and read on for the results of the previous poll.

Two weeks ago I asked you which MMOG you were most looking forward to and one hundred reponses later the poll has ended with some surprising results.

It’s telling that no one requested for any games to be added to the poll: half the games I did include didn’t receive a single vote! This includes the recently released All Points Bulletin, but also The Secret World which seems to be a highly antiticipated MMORPG on MMOG-centric sites. It’s also surprising to see the Torchlight MMO go without a vote, considering the enormous popularity of its singleplayer variant. Earthrise, Perpetuum Online and Rift: Planes of Telara weren’t quite so surprising, because they’re relatively low-key projects despite their promises of excellence.

Most surprising of all is seeing World of WarCraft: Cataclysm being overshadowed by three separate MMOGs and having all other MMOGs share the same number of votes: 2. It’s especially worth calling attention to Dark Millennium Online, which despite releasing sometime in 2013 and showing off a mere concept trailer at this year’s E3 did rake in 14 votes. And Final Fantasy XIV, which despite being a new entry in a massively popular RPG franchise still only managed a measly 2 votes.

The ultimate victor isn’t so much of a surprise, because it already ranks 1st on mostly every other MMOG site and it’s the one game I’ve covered more than any other: Guild Wars 2. A highly innovative fantasy MMORPG from a company with a track record that proves they can pull it off, which doesn’t require a monthly fee to boot. That’s certainly one alluring future prospect and it propelled the game to an enormous victory with 51 votes.

  • Star Wars: The Old Republic (15%, 15 Votes)
  • Warhammer 40.000: Dark Millennium Online (14%, 14 Votes)

  • Jumpgate: Evolution (2%, 2 Votes)
