An observant gamer can save a lot of money by frequently visiting digital download sites to check for new special offers. You can sometimes save as much as 80% on games with these deals, or even gain a free game for pre-ordering an upcoming title, which can quickly lead to a very healthy gaming collection at surprisingly little cost.

But it can be tiresome to constantly browse through enormous lists of sales for the best deals, so that’s what I’ll be doing for you in this weekly feature! I’ll cover the most interesting titles on sale and provide short descriptions and recommendations for each game. Should the currency used on the service not be in euro (GamersGate, Good Old Games), then I’ll also convert the pricing at the current exchange rate.

There’s a unique free weekend running over at Steam involving the upcoming real-time strategy game R.U.S.E.. There are also numerous other interesting deals to be noted, not least of which is the underwater-themed sale over at GamersGate. Be sure to check out the best deals mentioned below and subscribe to GameDrone for weekly coverage of the best digital download discounts!

Deals of the Week

  • R.U.S.E. on Steam - FREE Weekend and Save 10% Pre-order Deal – 44,99 EUR
This real-time strategy game offers a new take on the genre by centering around misleading ones opponent. It still involves building a base, creating units and researching technology, but all of that is secondary to how you use your ruses. It’s possible to feign attacks while sending your true force elsewhere under a shroud, place fake production buildings to lure or divert an attack, make your forces seem three times as large as they truly are, and so on. Be sure to take a look at this unusual World War 2 RTS as it’s free to play this weekend!
  • BioShock on GamersGate - Save 60% Weekend Deal – 7,15 EUR
As the sole survivor of a plane crash in the middle of the ocean you can do naught but swim to the mysterious lighthouse nearby. That’s where the fun starts in this excellent first person shooter with heavy RPG influences and an engaging story. It may be ridiculously easy and not very innovative, but it’s a lot of fun to play through and certainly worth a purchase at this price point.

Steam

  • Eschalon: Book II – Save 10% Launch Deal - 17,99 EUR
An isometric turn-based RPG in a large fantasy world. Its graphics are somewhat dated and it was created by a small independent studio, but it offers many dozens of hours of play time and a solid fantasy story. Worth a look if you’re into gameplay and storytelling over graphics in your RPGs.
  • Future Wars – Save 20% Launch Deal – 7,19 EUR
This is a futuristic turn-based strategy game similar to Advance Wars and the Battle Isle series. It features colorful 3D graphics and relatively straightforward turn-based strategy gameplay, but adds some unique gameplay modes (e.g.: AI vs AI) and extensive modding capabilities to the mix. Definitely worth a look at its low price point.

Impulse

  • Age of Booty – Save 50% Weekend Deal – 4,99 EUR
This quirky top-down action game puts you in command of a pirate ship. Take down merchant vessels and outposts to gather resources for ship upgrades, which you’ll need to take over the towns spread across the map in a race against other pirates (players or AI) attempting to do the same. The first pirate to control the entire map wins. Includes 5 activation limit DRM!
  • Gratuitous Space Battles Complete – Save 35% Weekend Deal – 20,09 EUR
An excellent indie strategy game that puts you in command of a space fleet. Design your own ships and set up your armadas before each battle, then watch as they tear into the opposing fleets. There is no direct unit control in this game, but it really doesn’t matter given the gratuitous space battles and excellent pre-battle planning systems. This package also includes all three race expansions (The Order, The Swarm and The Tribe). It should be noted that the package comes in at similar price at the official website, which is of course more supportive of the developer.
  • Guns of Icarus – Save 40% Weekend Deal - 4,62 EUR
A third/first-person action game in which you’re a privateer with an airship who ferries goods from place to place. During your travels you will be attacked by pirates, leaving you to defend yourself by taking command of the cannons on your ship, in person. It features both a singleplayer campaign and multiplayer gameplay in which players work together to defend their precious cargo by repairing the ship and taking command of its numerous cannons.
  • Theatre of War 2: Kursk 1943 – Save 30% Weekend Deal – 20,99 EUR
A historical tactical war game that takes place during the defensive stage of the battle of Kursk during World War 2. Take command of either the German or Soviet forces as you try to win this historically accurate battle. Theatre of War 2 does not function properly in Windows 7/Vista with UAC enabled.
  • THQ Ultimate Bundle – Save 80%65,49 EUR
Should you not have this bundle yet after the many months it’s been on sale on various sites, then this is definitely a pack you’ll want to pick up. It includes most older THQ games such as Company of Heroes + expansions, Red Faction series, S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl, Supreme Commander + expansion, Titan Quest + expansion, Warhammer 40.000: Dawn of War + expansions and more.
  • World War 2: Time of Wrath – Save 40% Weekend Deal – 16,19 EUR
A decent turn-based grand strategy game set in World War 2.

GamersGate (UK)

  • Amnesia: The Dark Descent – Save 10% Pre-order Deal – 13,92 EUR
An upcoming first person survival horror game.
  • Aquanox – Save 50% Weekend Deal - 2,34 EUR
Aquanox can best be described as FreeSpace 2 underwater. In the 27th century humanity has moved underwater and you’re the leader of a mercenary company trying to earn a living. So you hire yourself out to the highest bidder and blow stuff up in your souped up submarine craft. Great straight-up action gameplay, albeit entirely linear and accompanied by poor voice acting.
  • Aquanox 2: Revelation – Save 50% Weekend Deal – 2,35 EUR
Read the above and think more of the same with a better graphics engine… that pretty much sums up Aquanox 2. In other words: a great underwater action game that you’ll definitely want to play.
  • BioShock 2 – Save 30% Weekend Deal – 16,72 EUR
A solid sequel to BioShock which doesn’t impress quite so much in terms of atmosphere and storytelling, but does stick true to the formula of the first game and adds some welcome improvements, such as a greatly improved level of difficulty. It’s a game you’ll certainly want to play if you liked the original, but it does nothing to entice those who didn’t.
  • Crusaders: Thy Kingdom Come – Save 50% Weekend Deal – 9,54 EUR
This game offers medieval real-time strategy combat on a massive scale. It’s an interesting mixture between a historically accurate representation of medieval conflicts and fantastical heroes further empowered by religious artifacts. It’s also interesting that both weather and physics play major roles in battles, contrary to most contemporary RTS games. Definitely worth a look if you’re a strategy gamer.
  • Disciples III: Renaissance – Save 10% Launch Deal – 37,59 EUR
The Disciples series is a classic and celebrated franchise of gothic fantasy turn-based strategy games with strategic RPG gameplay similar to a Heroes of Might & Magic or King’s Bounty. This latest installment isn’t quite as good as its predecessors with numerous bugs and poor AI. It makes up for this by a story that miraculously doesn’t quite suck and solid, addictive, strategic battles. A good game to play after you’ve had your fun with Heroes of Might & Magic V and King’s Bounty, but you’ll definitely want to get those games first. King’s Bounty is actually on sale at Direct2Drive this week.
  • Sub Command – Save 50% Weekend Deal – 2,94 EUR
A dated submarine simulator featuring modern day submarines. It was very well received in its time and is certainly worth a look for submarine fans.
  • THQ Complete Collection – Save 55%95,60 EUR
Save 30 euro and get it on Impulse instead!

Direct2Drive (EU)

  • Save 50% on all Kalypso games
A majority of these games are fairly mediocre, but some are absolutely worth having. There’s the excellent fantasy turn-based strategy games of the King’s Bounty series as well as the tropical paradise simulators of the Tropico series. So be sure to take a good look at this list, but avoid those terrible Dawn of Magic games.

  • Serious Sam HD: The Second Encounter – Save 33%13,30 EUR
A remake of the second, and best, game in the Serious Sam series. It not only improves the graphics, but also introduces multiplayer DeathMatch and Survival modes.
