ArenaNet continues to reveal more Guild Wars 2 gameplay information now that their floodgates have opened. After revealing the ranger profession two days ago, we’re now treated to another Q&A session on the ArenaNet company blog. This time they cover user questions on the topic of death in Guild Wars 2 after ArenaNet’s extensive coverage last week.

A few interesting facts are uncovered, like repeated deaths causing the consciousness bar in downed mode to shorten to as much as 60% of its original length and not being able to move while in this state. There’s also another interesting interview up over at Massively, who talk with ArenaNet about the ranger profession.

Should you have missed out on the wealth of Guild Wars 2 information that’s been made public already, then you may wish to read up on the design manifesto, combat system and elementalist profession, dynamic events system #1 & #2, the personal story system, the warrior profession and traits system #1 & #2, the recent pieces on non-combat activities #1 and #2 and the additional information on activities and travel in Tyria.

Death

  • Being defeated carries a penalty which shrinks the consciousness bar in downed state. This penalty can be removed by surviving for several minutes.
  • In PvE it’s possible to rally from downed state by killing a monster, but in PvP you’d have to defeat another player.
  • It’s only possible to rally from downed state by defeating an enemy or being rallied by an ally.
  • Downed players rally when they receive experience from a kill. A killing blow is not required.
  • Players in downed state are put in a prone position and cannot move. Some professions have downed skills that allow them to move temporarily in this state, such as the elementalist’s Vapor Form.
  • The waypoints available for resurrection are identical to the fast-travel waypoints on the map. So there are no traveling advantages to dying.

Waiting to be revived by an ally is your best bet if there are no enemies to kill

General

  • ArenaNet is not innovating purely for the sake of innovation. Guild Wars 2 is intended to be the best game possible and they’ll leave genre conventions behind where they’re uncalled for.
  • All professions in Guild Wars 2 have a ranged option, like bows, firearms or magic.
  • The skill videos on the Guild Wars 2 website are not always reflective of how often you can use that skill in-game. In many instances the cooldowns are shortened for these videos.

Rangers can fight without pets, but are much more effective with their animal companions by their side

Rangers

  • It will be possible to slot skills that make pets more effective, similar to pet-oriented skills in Guild Wars.
  • Heal as One is a ranger healing skill that heals both the pet and its master, but is less effective than a straight-up self heal.
  • Rangers can choose to fight without a pet, but pets are now ingrained in the profession so it will always be less effective. It’s no longer a build-based choice like in Guild Wars.
  • A utility skill for switching pets that ArenaNet hinted at will be on a long cooldown in order to maintain balance.
  • It will not be possible to ride your pets.
  • All pets will eventually unlock 4 ability slots and start out with all of their skills unlocked. They also gain passive abilities as they evolve.
