An observant gamer can save a lot of money by frequently visiting digital download sites to check for new special offers. Sometimes these are special weekend deals and other times these may be pre-order arrangements that include a small discount or even additional free games, but in any case these are special deals that quickly lead to a very (un)healthy gaming collection at surprisingly low cost.
But it can be tiresome to constantly browse through enormous lists of sales for the best deals, so that’s what I’ll be doing for you in this weekly feature! I’ll cover the most interesting titles on sale and provide short descriptions and recommendations for each game. Should the currency used on the service not be in euro (Good Old Games), then I’ll also convert the pricing at the current exchange rate.
This week is absolutely dominated by GamersGate’s excellent RPG-week, but certainly also worth mentioning is Steam’s incredible discount for indie space strategy game Gratuitous Space Battles and its expansion packs. But the RPG-week does dominate and fans of the genre can score some genre classics at next-to-no cost at all! Whether it’s the turn-based strategy fantasy mixture of King’s Bounty, or the solid Action RPG experience of a Titan Quest or Torchlight, or even the incredible choice-and-consequence driven narrative of The Witcher. This week’s deals are for excellent games that ought to be in any PC gamer’s collection.
So go take a look at those fancy discounts below and be sure to subscribe to GameDrone for weekly coverage of the best digital download discounts!
Deals of the Week
- Freedom Force vs the Third Reich on GamersGate - Save 66% Weekend Deal – 1,34 EUR
Freedom Force vs the Third Reich present comic b0ok style turn-based tactical role-playing gameplay in an over-the-top setting that combines superheroes with nazis. What more could you ask for? - Gratuitous Space Battles Collector’s Edition on Steam – Save 75% Weekend Deal – 5,99 EUR
An excellent indie strategy game that puts you in command of a space fleet. Design your own ships and set up your armadas before each battle, then watch as they tear into the opposing fleets. There is no direct unit control in this game, but it really doesn’t matter given the gratuitous space battles and excellent pre-battle planning systems. This package also includes all three race expansions (The Order, The Swarm and The Tribe). - King’s Bounty Gold Edition on GamersGate - Save 75% Weekend Deal – 8,73 EUR
This gold edition contains two of the very best fantasy turn-based strategy games ever created. If you’ve ever liked games in the fashion of Disciples or Heroes of Might & Magic, then this is a bundle you cannot afford to miss! This is about as good as the genre gets – and they’re fairly recent games too! - The Witcher: Enhanced Edition: Director’s Cut on GamersGate - Save 66% Weekend Deal – 6,78 EUR
This is easily the best RPG since Baldur’s Gate 2 and arguably one of the best RPGs of all-time. And this enhanced edition brushes away nearly every flaw that the game originally had, making this purchase a no-brainer. You can’t afford to miss out on this one. - Titan Quest Gold Edition on GamersGate - Save 75% Weekend Deal – 3,73 EUR
Arguably the best Action RPG after the Diablo series, Titan Quest presents a linear world studded with countless monsters to slay, items to acquire and quests to partake in. This gold edition also contains the excellent Immortal Throne expansion pack which adds another campaign and eight new classes, amongst other things. Definitely a worthwhile purchase, especially because it also includes online and local co-op! - Torchlight on GamersGate - Save 75% Weekend Deal – 3,98 EUR
This game provides singleplayer Action RPG gameplay at its finest. It’s a great Diablo clone, but unfortunately doesn’t include any multiplayer functionality.
Steam
- Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days – Save 10% Pre-order Deal – 44,99 EUR
An upcoming third person shooter featuring two twisted criminals on the run. It includes a singleplayer campaign, co-op and multiplayer game modes. The original game was considered to be fairly mediocre, so I wouldn’t expect too much from this sequel. It’s also less expensive to pre-order this at your average webshop. - Puzzle Quest 2 – Save 10% Pre-order Deal – 14,39 EUR
The curious mixture of puzzle game and RPG returns in its original fantasy form in Puzzle Quest 2. It mostly seems to be more of the same, which means addictive match-3 gameplay combined with simple artwork and a sizable story mode, as well as multiplayer capability. So it looks to be good for fans of the series, but it will not convince anyone who didn’t like the previous Puzzle Quest games. - Worms Reloaded – Save 10% Pre-order Deal – 17,99 EUR
It’s an all new 2D Worms game set to release in August, a decade after the excellent Worms: Armaggedon. It’s essentially a turn-based warfare game with small squads of worms that is absolutely hilarous in single- and multiplayer alike. This new version includes up-to-date 2D graphics, four player multiplayer, achievements, leaderboards, a map editor, etc. It looks set to be a great new entry in a long dead franchise and comes with Steam integration!
- Age of Booty – Save 50% Weekend Deal – 4,99 EUR
This quirky top-down action game puts you in command of a pirate ship. Take down merchant vessels and outposts to gather resources for ship upgrades, which you’ll need to take over the towns spread across the map in a race against other pirates (players or AI) attempting to do the same. The first pirate to control the entire map wins. Includes 5 activation limit DRM! - Air Aces: Pacific – Save 35% Weekend Deal – 29,90 EUR
An arcade flight simulator set in the Pacific arena of World War 2 with variable reality-mode setting for different flight experiences. - Cogs – Save 40% Weekend Deal - 4,55 EUR
An unusual puzzle game in which you set out to build machines from a wide variety of components. It features 50 levels and 3 different game modes. - Lost Planet: Extreme Condition: Colonies Edition – Save 50% Weekend Deal – 7,49 EUR
A good third person shooter with sweet graphics, cool mechs and a halfway decent storyline. A definite must-have if you like mechs and futuristic shooters, otherwise it’s just a solid choice. - THQ Ultimate Bundle – Save 80% – 65,49 EUR
This is a bundle of some of THQ’s best PC games. It includes the entire Company of Heroes series of World War 2-era real-time strategy games, along with Warhammer 40.000: Dawn of War and Supreme Commander and their respective expansion packs. Proper first person shooters are also included in the form of the entire Red Faction franchise and both Full Spectrum Warrior games. The excellent Action RPG Titan Quest and its Immortal Throne expansion are also included, along with the superb free-roaming singleplayer FPS S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl. The racing game Juiced 2 and zoo simulator World of Zoo round out the package. - World War 2: Time of Wrath – Save 40% Weekend Deal – 16,19 EUR
A decent turn-based grand strategy game set in World War 2.
GamersGate
- Amnesia: The Dark Descent – Save 10% Pre-order Deal – 13,45 EUR
An upcoming first person survival horror game. - Beyond Divinity – Save 66% Weekend Deal – 3,39 EUR
A solid isometric cRPG that never quite manages to live up to its superior predecessor. - Deus Ex: Game of the Year Edition – Save 66% Weekend Deal – 3,39 EUR
Deus Ex is an incredible first person shooter experience that should already be in your collection. It presents a compelling story of conspiracy theories and corruption and ties it in with wide-open gameplay and extensive character development. An all-around great game that won over 30 Game of the Year awards and was named Best Game Ever by PC Gamer in 2007. - Deus Ex: Invisible War – Save 66% Weekend Deal – 3,39 EUR
Invisible War offered solid first person shooter gameplay that never managed to rival its predecessor. This was mostly caused by its simultaneous release on the Xbox which resulted in tiny levels, dumbed down RPG aspects, less dynamic gameplay, and numerous other flaws the original never had. And yet it’s still a very competent shooter that’s well worth the price of admission. - Gothic Universe – Save 50% Weekend Deal – 9,97 EUR
A collection containing all three Gothic games and their respective expansion packs. These are open-world third-person fantasy RPGs released to mixed success. Gothic 2 is generally considered to be the best game in the series and one of the better open-world fantasy RPGs, much like Morrowind. - Loki – Save 66% Weekend Deal – 3,39 EUR
A decent and straightforward hack & slash RPG. - Sacred 2: Fallen Angel – Save 50% Weekend Deal - 14,98 EUR
Sacred 2: Fallen Angel is an expansive 3D action RPG with a wide variety of playable characters who cannot be customized. It makes up for this in a wealth of items, a huge explorable open world and tons of monsters to kill. It easily ranks amongst the better games of the hack & slash persuasion. - Star Wolves 3: Civil War – Save 50% Weekend Deal – 12,48 EUR
This game harkens back to the original Star Wolves with similarly awesome and addictive RPG/RTS gameplay in space, no DRM and poor voice-acting. It’s nowhere near as buggy as Star Wolves 2 and while the interface takes a bit of getting used to it’s definitely a fun game to play. - THQ Complete Collection – Save 50% Weekend Deal – 49,99 EUR
It’s not an actual complete collection of all THQ PC games, but this package does include some great games. The entire Company of Heroes series of World War 2-era real-time strategy games and the excellent Warhammer 40.000: Dawn of War and all of it’s expansion packs make for a great RTS bundle. Also included is the excellent action RPG of Titan Quest and it’s Immortal Throne expansion pack. The entire Red Faction series is also included, along with the excellent free-roaming singleplayer FPS S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl, racing game Juiced 2, mediocre multiplayer FPS Frontlines: Fuel of War, mediocre action game Saints Row 2 and mediocre zoo-simulator World of Zoo. - Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter – Save 50% Weekend Deal - 4,99 EUR
A decent tactical shooter. It falls in the love it or hate it category, so try before you buy. Still a very good deal if you like tactical shooters with semi-realistic gameplay. - Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter 2 – Save 50% Weekend Deal – 4,99 EUR
A decent follow-up to Advanced Warfighter, but it suffers from a similarly weak story and horrible AI problems. Also features ads in-game. Supposedly still a decent tactical shooter, but be prepared to deal with shitty teammates.
Good Old Games
- TopWare Pack – Save 50% Weekend Deal (30% individually) – 24,- EUR
This TopWare Interactive bundle contains several good games. The entire Earth 21** series of futuristic real-time strategy games is included, as well as the excellent turn-based jRPG Septerra Core. Two Worlds is a solid third-person open world RPG that has seen many improvements since its launch. Knights & Merchants is a good city-building game similar to the Settlers series. The Jagged Alliance 2: Wildfire expansion introduces a lot of challenging new missions to the excellent turn-based tactical strategy game and Gorky 17 provides similar gameplay in a slightly different setting. Enclave is a solid Action RPG and Jack Orlando: A Cinematic Adventure rounds it out with decent point and click adventure gameplay.
