Good Old Games is no more. That is the gist of the cryptic message that suddenly appeared today on the popular digital distribution service’s website. It further states that GOG.com users need not worry for their games, because a technical solution will come in place this week to allow users to download their games.
But other than this strange message on the front page there has been no word out of CDProjekt whatsoever. No prior indications that the service wasn’t doing well, nor any word on their Facebook or Twitter accounts. Even more suspicious is the timing, with the supposed shutdown occuring on a sunday afternoon in the midst of a weekend sale and mere days after adding Age of Wonders to the collection.
Has GOG.com actually closed down without forewarning and with only a poorly formatted HTML page to indicate it as such? That seems very unlikely at this point, with the circumstances pointing quite clearly to a hacker playing an elaborate prank. This assumption is also supported by the fact that GOG.com is both extremely slow to access and impossible to ping at the time of writing, both of which indicate a hacker at work.
Whatever the case, we won’t know the full truth until Monday when the CDProjekt guys and girls get back to work and hopefully shed some more light on this mysterious message.
