Digital distribution platforms feature regular special offers to lure in new customers. These exceptional deals can be used to your advantage as a means to quickly assemble a vast collection of great PC games at very low cost. But that requires regularly checking in on each and every digital download service for their latest deals, which can be a tiresome affair.

That’s where this weekly Discount Drone feature comes in. Within I take a weekly look at everything that is on offer and extract the best deals for your perusal. These are formatted by genre and accompanied by short and accurate descriptions, so that you can decide whether a game might be worth having. This includes special offers on: Direct2Drive, GamersGate, Get Games, Good Old Games, Green Man Gaming, Impulse and Steam.

This week isn’t quite as impressive as those in the previous months, but certain titles do stand out. World of Goo, the sticky puzzling game that involves molding constructions from goblets of goo is now ridiculously cheap during Green Man Gaming’s “When it’s gone… it’s gone!” sale. The same goes for Darwinia, a retro real-time strategy game featuring neon colored stickmen. Adventure fans also have a great deal to keep them busy with the entire Tales of Monkey Island season up for grabs on Steam.

Read on for more exciting deals and subscribe to GameDrone for weekly coverage of the best digital download offers!

Deals of the Week

  • Darwinia on Green Man Gaming – Save 83% Deal – 0,99 EUR
A retro-themed indie real-time strategy game where you have to save the Darwinians from extinction as a computer virus has infiltrated their world. It only features singleplayer, but is actually quite fun to play.
  • Rebellion Bundle on Good Old Games – Save 50% Weekend Deal - 29,29 EUR
The entire Rebellion collection is up for grabs on GOG.com this weekend. That includes some very notable titles like the excellent real-time strategy game series Ground Control, which introduced the concept of no base building to the genre. The Empire Earth series on the other hand is a mixture of Age of Empires’ gameplay and the huge variety in eras from Civilization in one great real-time strategy package, although the 3rd title in the series isn’t very good. Evil Genuis is an excellent real-time strategy game in which you steer your evil empire towards world domination, whereas The Republic is a freeform strategy game in which you aspire to take control over a city away from its dictator. The Lords of the Realm and Lords of Magic games offer great fantasy strategy gameplay in real-time and turn-based (LoM) formats, while Judge Dredd: Dredd vs Death is the only mediocre game in the package – and it’s a fairly enjoyable mediocre sci-fi shooter at that.
  • Tales of Monkey Island Complete Pack on Steam – Save 86% Weekend Deal - 4,69 EUR
This new Telltale series marks a return to the excellent Monkey Island franchise with lush new 3D graphics and an engaging new episodic storyline. These five episodes form a solid new entry in the franchise that never quite manages to reach the same allure as the originals, nor even Monkey Island 4, but still offers some of the best point and click adventure gameplay in a long time.
  • World of Goo on Green Man Gaming – Save 89% Deal – 1,79 EUR
Take charge of an armada of goo and use it to form all sorts of weird contraptions to solve puzzles. It’s charming, humorous and challenging.

Action

  • Dark Sector on Green Man Gaming – Save 34% Deal – 8,49 EUR
A decent third-person action game with a cover system and mediocre plot.

Adventure

  • Sam & Max: The Devil’s Playhouse on Telltale Games – Save 50% Deal – 7,07 EUR
The third season of Telltale’s popular adventure game series has finally concluded and it’s the best season yet! This package includes all five episodes of the third season for some hilarious point-and-click adventure gameplay. It’s been reduced in price to celebrate the launch of the final episode.
  • Sherlock Holmes Sleuth Pack on Impulse – Save 50% Weekend Deal – 19,99 EUR
A collection of Sherlock Holmes themed adventure games. Includes The Awakened, vs Jack the Ripper and Nemesis. Interestingly Nemesis is only available in this package, because the stand-alone version is region-locked to North America.
  • Sherlock Holmes Versus Arsene Lupin on Impulse – Save 50% Weekend Deal – 9,99 EUR
Yet another Sherlock Holmes themed adventure game, but this one is not included in the Sleuth Pack.

First Person Shooter

  • Blacklight: Tango Down on Steam – Save 50% Weekend Deal – 7,49 EUR
Blacklight: Tango Down is a fairly recent multiplayer-oriented first person shooter that adds in a unique device with its Hyper Reality Visor. This visor allows players to spot threats anywhere on the map, but doesn’t allow them to use their weapons. Apart from this interesting feature it’s mostly just a generic multiplayer shooter with a bad lobby system.
  • Cryostasis: Sleep of Reason on Green Man Gaming – Save 57% Deal – 4,25 EUR
A first person survival horror game set on an old nuclear icebreaker on the North Pole.
  • NecroVisioN: Lost Company on Green Man Gaming – Save 63% Weekend Deal – 9,15 EUR
The latest title in the NecroVisioN franchise is actually a prequel that puts you in the shoes of a German soldier fighting off hordes of monsters during World War I. A good deal if you’re into arcade first person shooters with hordes of mindless monsters to blast your way through.
  • Painkiller: Black Edition on Green Man Gaming – Save 30% Weekend Deal – 6,95 EUR
Go all-guns-blazing in this excellent fast-paced first person shooter with a grim mythical setting that puts you in the role of a demonic ass kicking mercenary. Crazy weapons, crazy enemies, crazy powers and a crazily fast pace make for one heck of a ride. And multiplayer offers solid competitive arena-based hardcore FPS play that’s unfortunately quite empty nowadays due to the free excellence that is Quake Live. Also included is the Battle Out of Hell expansion pack, which was the last decent Painkiller game.

Role-playing Game

  • Dungeon Defenders on GamersGate / Impulse – Save 10% Pre-order Deal – 7,19 EUR
Choose a class, create a character and team up with three friends to defend your dungeon from waves of monsters! Add in a wide variety of towers, pets, loot, monsters, achievements, game modes and a storydriven campaign and you have Dungeon Defenders’ unique take on the tower defense genre. These digital pre-orders come with an exclusive familiar depending on the digital distribution service (Direct2Drive, GamersGate, Impulse or Steam).
  • Guild Wars: Eye of the North on Steam – Save 33% Weekend Deal – 10,04 EUR
Eye of the North is an expansion pack that builds on the story of the original Guild Wars Prophecies campaign and paves the way for the storyline heading into the highly anticipated fantasy MMORPG Guild Wars 2. It also introduces numerous new features into the mix such as challenging dungeons, improved graphics, the hall of monuments and much more. At least one of the three Guild Wars campaigns and a level 20 character is required to explore the areas added in this expansion pack.
  • Mount & Blade: Warband on Impulse – Save 65% Weekend Deal – 10,49 EUR
Take an excellent medieval life simulator with directly controlled combat, a wide open world and near endless possibilities. Then add in 64-player multiplayer, newly improved combat mechanics, enhanced graphics and animations, new factional rulership gameplay and loads of other improvements. Now you’ve got Mount & Blade: Warband, an excellent sort-of Role-playing Game that can last for hours on end… and then some more with epic medieval multiplayer clashes.

Real-time Strategy

  • Demigod on Impulse – Save 70% Weekend Deal – 4,27 EUR
Demigod offers a more strategic and attractive take on the popular DotA subgenre of strategy games. This means selecting a hero and then taking the fight to the other team while trying to destroy their main structure to win the game. Demigod mixes things up by offering two different hero types – the regular DotA heroes and generals who command small forces of units – mob upgrades and generally a wider breath of options. It’s unfortunately nowhere near as popular as its competition despite quite enjoyable gameplay.
  • Grand Ages: Rome on Green Man Gaming – Save 58% Deal - 8,35 EUR
A city-building real-time strategy game set in the Roman era.
  • Gratuitous Space Battles DLC Bundle on Positech Games – Save 50% Deal - 9,99 EUR
Gratuitous Space Battles is a space strategy game that involves ship assembly and positioning, but no control during battles whatsoever. The singleplayer campaign is essentially a series of escalating challenges, but it’s also possible to create your own battle scenarios or download other people’s scenarios. This package does not include the original game which is required to run the four included DLC packs that introduce new ships and equipment to the game.
  • Imperium Romanum Gold Edition on GamersGate – Save 66% Weekend Deal – 6,79 EUR
A celebrated series of Roman Empire simulation games. This includes the first expansion packs, but all the other expansion packs are also on sale.

Turn-based Strategy

  • World War 2: Time of Wrath on GamersGate – Save 75% Deal – 6,74 EUR
A decent turn-based grand strategy game set in World War 2.

Simulator

  • Air Aces: Pacific on Impulse – Save 50% Deal – 24,99 EUR
An arcade flight simulator set in the Pacific arena of World War 2 with variable reality-mode settings for different flight experiences.

Platform and Puzzle Games

  • Blade Kitten on GamersGate – Save 33% Weekend Deal – 7,99 EUR
Blade Kitten is a side-scrolling platform game with quirky 3D graphics. Its excellent and varied platforming gameplay is supported by a mediocre, but somehow still engaging, story about the bounty hunter Kit Ballard who sees her ship blown up and gets into even more trouble from that point on.
  • Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords on Impulse – Save 25% Weekend Deal – 3,74 EUR
Puzzle Quest is a curious mixture of role-playing game and puzzle game elements. It involves creating a character and exploring a fantasy world much like in a RPG, but all encounters are resolved by interesting and varied match-3 puzzles. Puzzle Quest is not an outstanding puzzle game nor an excellent RPG, but the combination of elements makes for a very addictive and entertaining gaming experience.
  • Trine on Green Man Gaming – Save 60% Deal – 6,65 EUR
A great indie platform game featuring singleplayer and local (same computer) co-op modes. Read my first impressions for an indication of what the game plays like and why you should get it.

Other Games and Bundles

  • Poker Night at the Inventory on Steam – Save 10% Pre-order Deal – 3,59 EUR
Take Team Fortress 2′s Heavy, Max from Sam & Max, Homestar Runner’s Strong Bad and Tychus from Penny Arcade and you get Poker Night at the Inventory! It’ll be a game about playing poker, but not quite in the way you’re used to.
  • THQ Ultimate Bundle on Impulse – Save 68% Deal – 93,64 EUR
This is a bundle of some of THQ’s best PC games. It includes the entire Company of Heroes series of World War 2-era real-time strategy games, along with Warhammer 40.000: Dawn of War and Supreme Commander and their respective expansion packs. Proper first person shooters are also included in the form of the entire Red Faction franchise and both Full Spectrum Warrior games. The excellent Action RPG Titan Quest and its Immortal Throne expansion are also included, along with the superb free-roaming singleplayer FPS S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl. The racing game Juiced 2 and zoo simulator World of Zoo round out the package.
  • Uplink on Green Man Gaming – Save 83% Deal – 0,99 EUR
In this game you assume the role of a freelance hacker. Take on jobs and upgrade your tools with the earnings as you progress through the game’s plot.
